Once again, @NorfolkCC is attempting to deflect responsibility for the failure of the Norwich Western Link by pointing fingers at @NaturalEngland . Letโ€™s be clear: the collapse of this project lies squarely at the feet of the Council itself. For years, the Council chose to ignore warnings from environmental bodies, local communities, and independent experts who highlighted the ecological significance of the Wensum Valley. They pushed forward with a deeply flawed route, investing ยฃ56 million of public money into a plan that was never fit to proceed. Now, having been told definitively that the scheme cannot go ahead in its current form, they are casting Natural England as the barrierโ€”when in reality, it is the Councilโ€™s own poor planning and refusal to consider viable alternatives that has led to this impasse. Natural England has simply done its statutory job: upholding the legal protections for one of the most important habitats in the country. It is not their role to design roads or suggest environmentally acceptable routes. That responsibility rests with the Councilโ€”and it is one they have repeatedly failed to meet. The continued talk of reviving previously rejected options, or starting over with a new route through this protected area, is both irresponsible and wasteful. It risks yet more delay, environmental damage, and ballooning costs, all while failing to address the regionโ€™s real transport needs. Instead of scapegoating others, Norfolk County Council must now accept the hard truth: the Western Link is a failed project. Itโ€™s time to stop clinging to the past and start investing in sustainable, future-facing alternatives such as public transport improvements, active travel routes, and upgrades to existing infrastructure. The people of Norfolkโ€”and the Wensum Valleyโ€”deserve better than this endless cycle of denial and deflection. edp24.co.uk/news/25187276.noโ€ฆ

The Stop Wensum campaign group would like to address @NorfolkCC (NCC) public assertions regarding the Norwich Western Project. The claim that this project is โ€œstill aliveโ€ and remains under discussion with the Department of Transport is, quite frankly, nothing more than political camouflage. By refusing to confront the reality of this situation, NCC is delaying meaningful progress and undermining the trust of the community. The Norwich Western Project has already wasted millions of pounds, yet the Conservative-led council persists in clinging to a scheme that is simply not viable in its current form. Continuing to defend this failed proposal is not only irresponsible but demonstrates a worrying lack of accountability. It is time for NCC to acknowledge the truth that this project, as proposed, is dead. Denial is not a strategy; it is an obstruction to progress and a misuse of public resources. We recognise that other potential solutions may exist, but these need to be thought out with care and costed responsibly. That process can only begin once NCC accepts that the original scheme is unworkable and moves forward with an open and honest approach. This community deserves practical, evidence-based proposalsโ€”not more excuses or empty promises. We urge NCC to face up to the realities of this failed project and begin engaging with local stakeholders to explore alternative options that truly meet the areaโ€™s needs. Only through transparent dialogue and rigorous planning can a sustainable path forward be identified. The Stop Wensum campaign group remains committed to holding NCC accountable and advocating for responsible and effective infrastructure planning that respects both the environment and the local community. @NorfolkCC @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @TransportActio2 @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NENorfolkSufflk @guardianeco @LilianGreenwood

Blaming environmental regulations for hindering economic growth oversimplifies complex issues, creating a false conflict between development and conservation. Nature and the economy are not competitors but allies in building a sustainable future. Strategic planning and streamlined, evidence-based guidelines can ensure progress while protecting vital ecosystems. Recognising natureโ€™s intrinsic and economic value, promoting sustainable practices, and incentivising conservation foster long-term prosperity. Collaboration between government, environmental organisations, and industry is essential to harmonise growth and environmental recovery. A balanced approach will not only secure economic benefits but safeguard the natural world for generations, demonstrating that growth and nature can thrive together. thetimes.com/uk/politics/artโ€ฆ @transportgovuk @NaturalEngland

edp24.co.uk/news/24971549.goโ€ฆ We are deeply dismayed by Mr. Plantโ€™s continued efforts to shift blame onto @NaturalEngland and protected species, instead of confronting the glaring inadequacies and failures of @NorfolkCC leadership. His repeated claims ignore the reality that the council was forewarned years ago of the significant environmental constraints yet chose to push forward recklessly, in direct disregard of these warnings. It is disingenuous of Mr. Plant to suggest that Natural England blindsided the councilโ€”this narrative is a blatant attempt to deflect accountability. From the outset, voices from across the community, including environmental experts, urged the council to establish a robust Plan B. Yet, these calls fell on deaf ears, dismissed by the councilโ€™s arrogant assertion that such precautions were unnecessary. Now, following years of mismanagement, ยฃ56 million of taxpayersโ€™ money has been squandered on a project that has collapsed under the weight of its own poor planning. As Lilian Greenwood, Roads Minister, rightly highlighted, the council has failed its constituents, wasted public resources, and left local residents at greater risk of rat-running, the very problem this failing scheme was supposed to fix. This is not just incompetenceโ€”it is a betrayal of public trust. The council's willingness to gamble public money on a risky, environmentally damaging scheme with no clear backup is nothing short of shameful. We demand that those responsible for this debacle accept full responsibility for their failings and step down immediately. This is not a time for hollow excuses or misdirection; it is a time for accountability. Norfolk County Council's leadership has failed its constituents and must make way for more competent, forward-thinking leadership that can deliver for the people of Norfolk without compromising our environment or wasting precious resources. Norfolk deserves better. Enough is enough. @NorfolkCC @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @TransportActio2 @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NENorfolkSufflk @guardianeco @LilianGreenwood

OPPORTUNITY LOST edp24.co.uk/news/24961416.prโ€ฆ The time has come to face an honest truth โ€“ Norfolk deserves better than the Norwich Western Link (NWL) and the outdated priorities put forward by Transport East @transporteast With the withdrawal of NWL planning and a high likelihood that the government will ultimately cancel the project, we are witnessing a pivotal opportunity lost. As David Pett of Stop Wensum Link Campaign Group states, "While Transport East may be a well-intended body, its singular focus on road building reflects a naive and dated mindset. Norfolkโ€™s businesses and communities deserve an innovative, sustainable, and integrated transport strategy โ€“ not a glorified, expensive village bypass that fails to deliver on economic growth." The NWL was never a solution for Norfolkโ€™s economic aspirations. It promised little in terms of economic gain compared to its enormous cost and devastating environmental consequences. Pursuing projects like NWL demonstrates a failure to address the real needs of the region. Norfolk needs a bold shift towards smarter, more sustainable transportation solutions. The focus must be on integrated systems that truly connect communities, reduce congestion, and support local economies. Rather than outdated road schemes, we should prioritise initiatives such as: Enhancing Public Transport โ€“ Increased investment in buses and trains would provide practical, accessible alternatives to car dependency. Promoting Active Travel โ€“ Developing safe, high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure benefits both the environment and public health. Smart Traffic Management โ€“ Technology-driven solutions can manage congestion effectively without the need for destructive road expansions. Sustainable Development Goals โ€“ Supporting electric vehicle infrastructure and innovative urban design to reduce emissions and adapt to the future. The fixation on road-building by decision-makers at Transport East ignores these alternatives and wastes time and resources on projects that fail to provide long-term benefits. Norfolkโ€™s prosperity depends on viewing transport and connectivity through a modern lens. Itโ€™s time for a fresh approachโ€”one that values collaboration, sustainability, and forward-thinking solutions. Norfolk deserves nothing less. @NorfolkCC @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @TransportActio2 @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NaturalEngland @guardianeco

Traffic congestion and rat-running are not problems confined to the west of Norwich โ€“ they are issues that affect communities across Norfolk. Narrow country lanes, overwhelmed villages, and overburdened roads are now commonplace across the county, creating significant challenges for residents, businesses, and the environment. The solution cannot lie in one singular project or approach. We need a comprehensive transport plan that works for all of Norfolk. A sustainable and inclusive strategy must address the larger picture. Improving all radial roads connecting Norwich to the rest of the county is essential, ensuring smoother traffic flow while reducing the pressure on rural communities. We also need a serious commitment to enhancing public transport, making it a viable, affordable, and accessible alternative to car travel for everyone. Buses, trains, and active transport options such as cycling and walking need to form the backbone of an integrated system that connects towns, villages, and the city more effectively. Equally important is better communication and collaboration between transport and planning authorities. Infrastructure decisions should be carefully aligned with housing and business developments, ensuring that growth and accessibility go hand in hand without disproportionately burdening certain areas. Norfolk deserves an approach that benefits the entire county, not piecemeal plans that shift the problem from one community to another. The challenges we face are no longer simply about new roads like the doomed NWL; they are about reimagining how people move and ensuring that Norfolk's solutions are fair, sustainable, and forward-thinking. By focusing on a county-wide transport strategy that prioritises long-term improvement over short-term fixes, we can create a future where no community is left behind. This is not the time for disjointed plans โ€“ it is time for vision, coordination, and real solutions for all of Norfolk. @NorfolkCC @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NaturalEngland @guardianeco

edp24.co.uk/news/24948717.noโ€ฆ The Stop Wensum Link Group strongly supports the need for a Plan B to address the pressing congestion issues west of Norwich. However, any alternative must prioritise both economic sensibility and environmental responsibility. We believe that an effective solution can be found that not only alleviates transport difficulties but also safeguards Norfolk's treasured natural heritage. The River Wensum Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is a jewel of ecological significance, demanding the utmost care and preservation. Its delicate balance supports the habitats of protected species whose very existence depends on safeguarding this fragile environment from unnecessary interference. The concerns voiced by @NaturalEngland serve as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to pursue solutions that are not only sustainable but also minimally disruptive. This is a call to action for more thoughtful, innovative, and ecologically sensitive approaches that honour the irreplaceable value of this extraordinary landscape. We urge @NorfolkCC and the @transportgovuk to explore alternative strategies that deliver measurable benefits for local transport without incurring the significant financial and environmental costs of the abandoned Norwich Western Link. A Plan B should reflect a commitment to innovative, cost-effective, and ecologically sound design principles. By focusing on smarter solutions, we can address congestion while discharging our duty to future generations to preserve Norfolkโ€™s unique countryside. The Stop Wensum Link Group stands ready to engage constructively in discussions and to advocate for approaches that respect both the needs of residents and the irreplaceable value of the natural environment. This moment presents an opportunity to rethink and reset, ensuring a balanced and fair outcome for all. @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NaturalEngland @guardianeco

TIME FOR HEADS TO ROLL! We wholeheartedly support the sentiments expressed by John Allaway in his letter regarding the deeply concerning failures surrounding the Norfolk Western Link (NWL) project. The issues raised highlight grave mismanagement, deeply flawed ecological surveys, and a lack of transparency on the part of Norfolk County Council (NCC). These are failings that can no longer be ignored. It is deeply troubling to learn that the arboricultural surveys commissioned by NCC were so riddled with errors and omissions as to render them utterly unreliable. The misclassification of woodlands, double-counting of trees, incorrect identification of tree species, and the alarming underreporting of Ancient and Veteran Trees (AVTs) on the proposed roadโ€™s footprint indicate either gross incompetence or deliberate manipulation of data to push the project forward. The notion that only seven AVTs would be impacted, when the actual figure is 61โ€”49 of which would be completely destroyedโ€”demonstrates either breathtaking negligence or a blatant effort to mislead decision-makers and the public. AVTs represent irreplaceable habitats, and their destruction cannot be mitigated. This level of disregard for our natural environment is unacceptable. Such actionsโ€”or failures to act responsiblyโ€”place serious doubt on the integrity of NCC's handling of the NWL project. Were these surveys tailored to suit NCCโ€™s agenda, or were they simply carried out by consultants who failed in their professional duties? Both scenarios are damning. If the former is true, this constitutes fraudulent behaviour. If the latter is the case, NCC has a duty to hold its consultants accountable for professional negligence. The absence of transparency on these issues raises significant questions about how decisions have been made and whether the public trust has been grossly betrayed. Furthermore, @NorfolkCC attempts to shift the blame for the project's demise onto @NaturalEngland and their focus on bats are not only misleading but also an obvious attempt to deflect attention from their own failings. This narrative ignores the systemic flaws in their ecological assessments and project planning and seeks to obscure the broader environmental damage that the NWL would have caused. Accountability is crucial. That is why we are calling for the immediate resignation of Councillor Mason Billig, leader of Norfolk County Council. Under her leadership, the council has presided over a mishandled, misguided, and environmentally destructive project. Her position is untenable, and her resignation is essential to restore public trust and ensure that NCC operates with the transparency and responsibility expected of those entrusted with public office. At Stop Wensum Link, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the environment, promoting sustainable solutions, and holding decision-makers accountable. This case exemplifies why such vigilance is necessary. We stand with those demanding answers, seeking accountability, and fighting for the preservation of our irreplaceable natural heritage. @labourlewis @AliceMLabour @BenGoldsborough @CllrTerryJermy @SteveMorphew @AngelaRayner @Heidi_Labour @DanGrimmer24 @NaturalEngland @guardianeco

Dualling A47 Easton To North Tuddenham youtu.be/JPKdo2wDQ9A?si=ksElโ€ฆ via @YouTube It's heartbreaking to see the environmental damage caused by this construction, but honestly, it's just a glimpse of what could happen if the Norwich Western Link goes ahead. The scale of destruction to trees, countryside, River Wensum SAC and wildlife would be devastating. Once these natural spaces are gone, we can't get them back. Projects like this need to be reconsidered before we lose even more of our precious environment. @labourlewis @SteveMorphew
