Last night got me thinking about something I’ve been thinking about for years.
The Boomerang Protocol 🪃
We’ve seen NFTs get drained from holders wallets through scams, malicious signatures and other technical exploits. Last night,
@0xQuit 🫡 removed BAYC apes from affected wallets to protect them after a scam had already extracted millions in assets.
That got me thinking…
What if NFT projects built an optional recovery protocol directly into the NFT smart contract?
A holder could voluntarily enroll their NFT and verify ownership. Once enrolled, the holder would have an additional layer of protection.
If that NFT is transferred under verified theft conditions, the holder could trigger the Boomerang Protocol through a fast, heavily authenticated recovery process.
The NFT would automatically return to a secure Recovery Vault controlled by the project until the legitimate owner could reclaim it.
The holder still maintains control of their NFT. The protocol would simply be an optional safety net.
You could even have a small blockchain native recovery reserve attached to the protection system to cover the transaction costs, so the victim doesn't need to have gas available after the theft.
Obviously, there would need to be serious safeguards against abuse. Multiple authentication layers, strict recovery conditions, time windows, transparent smart contracts and an on-chain recovery vault.
But the basic idea is simple:
If your NFT gets stolen, it should have a way to come back.

Maybe what happened last night is the example that finally gets people thinking about building this into NFTs from the beginning.
And @QuitNFT, I’ve been on this for some time now however, seeing what you did last night is what pushed me to finally put this idea into words.
