Engineering education builds knowledge. Engineering practice develops judgement. The profession needs both. Arjun C.R., who leads the Special Structures Division of the Power Business Unit at Tata Consulting Engineers, participated as an industry expert at the Industry Academia Workshop organised by the Department of Earthquake Engineering at IIT Roorkee. The workshop brought together experts from academia and industry, including representatives from leading IITs across India. Drawing on his involvement in the development of seismic codes in India, Arjun spoke about bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical engineering application. He highlighted the need for curricula that strengthen fundamentals while also helping young engineers develop an intuitive understanding of structural behaviour and the practical skills required to make sound design decisions. He also reflected on how technological and societal change is reshaping structural engineering, calling for continued skill development, effective change management and stronger outreach to prepare the next generation for the profession’s evolving demands. Closer collaboration between academia and industry can help build engineers who understand not only how to calculate, but also how structures behave. #TataConsultingEngineers #EngineeringExcellence #StructuralEngineering #SeismicEngineering #IndustryAcademia #FutureOfEngineering #IITRoorkee
