Clashes broke out at Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) after students questioned the use of the campus auditorium for a non-film event organised by the Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP). Three police complaints have since been filed, including complaints involving SRFTI students and unknown persons. Around 30 people were reportedly injured.

Tensions erupted in Ujjain over the demolition of a portion of the Shahi Masjid. A large group clashed with police at the demolition site. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of several recent rape cases reported in Delhi and the NCR. The Court said the incidents bear “painful similarities” to the 2012 Nirbhaya case. A minor’s alleged gang-rape on a sleeper bus was among the cases considered by the Court. Justice JB Pardiwala said the cases highlight failures of law enforcement agencies. The 2012 Nirbhaya case had led to nationwide protests and subsequent changes to laws dealing with sexual offences.

Protests at Lovely Professional University in Punjab’s Phagwara turned violent over claims that a female student was allegedly raped on campus. Students vandalised property, blocked NH-44 and allegedly set vehicles on fire during the unrest. Several police personnel were injured as protesters allegedly pelted stones and attacked police vehicles. Punjab Police deployed more than 2,000 personnel at the university to restore and maintain order.
