Times on base is hits plus walks plus hit by pitch, and it rewards being good and being available in roughly equal measure. Pete Rose played 3,562 games, more than anyone in the history of the sport, and he needed nearly every one of them to hold off Barry Bonds. Bonds drew 2,558 walks and got within 330 of Rose while playing roughly 600 fewer games. Rose reached base at a .375 clip. Bonds reached at .444.
