Daughters Mikahla (4) and Abby (3) died with her. Inquest: drowning, treated as murder-suicide. She had sought help the night before. 📌 Catherine Palmer (née O'Sullivan), Kinvara, Co. Santina Cawley (2), daughter of her then-partner Michael Cawley. Harrington convicted of murder May 2022, life sentence. Santina was left in her care around 3am after a night of drinking; found with 53 injuries — traumatic brain injury, spinal damage, fractures. Appeal dismissed 2024. 📌 Tegan McGhee, Limerick, March 2021. Mason O'Connell Conway (4), son of her then-boyfriend John Paul O'Connell. Pleaded guilty to murder Jan 2026, lite sentence, plus 4% years for child cruelty. Mason died from severe head and liver injuries three days after the assault. The father was separately jailed for neglect and endangerment. 📌 Unnamed stepmother, Dublin, March 2021. Boy (4), son of her then-partner. Pleaded guilty to manslaughter (not guilty to murder) at trial Nov 2025; life sentence imposed Jan 2026. Child died from injuries typically associated with car crashes or serious assaults. Mother had voluntarily given custody to the tather and the accused some months earlier. 📌Historical case. Sisters Elizabeth E., aged 23, and Rose E., aged 18, from County Roscommon. Tried in 1935. Charged with the murder of Elizabeth’s infant daughter. Both received death sentences, later commuted. Part of a larger pattern of infanticide prosecutions of unmarried mothers in Ireland between 1922 and 1950. 📌Northern Ireland case. Madeleine O’Neill, Carryduff, 12 July 2005. Killed her daughter Lauren, aged 9, then herself. An independent inquiry found mental-health service failings after she had disclosed thoughts of harming herself and her child. 📌 Northern Ireland case. Belfast, 27 July 2021. A 31-year-old mother convicted of murdering her 8-week-old son and attempted murder of her 2 and a half year old daughter. Received a 20-year sentence. She cannot be named to protect the surviving child. Note: convictions were later quashed on appeal, and in August 2026 she pleaded guilty to infanticide and attempted murder. 📌 Limerick case, 27 September 2022, attempted murder. A 49-year-old Russian national convicted of attempted murder of her then 8-year-old daughter. The child survived. She received 9 years custodial after a 12-year term with part suspended. The mother cannot be named to protect the child. These are the main publicly named cases. Many involved severe mental illness or murder-suicide. The partner and step-parent cases, including Harrington, McGhee, and the Dublin stepmother, involved blunt-force or assault injuries.
