Things we like to see: the House of Commons discussing parole reform.   This is a priority for us, our members and the families we work with.   It doesn't matter who delivers these changes. @FrankCaputoKTN, @ArpanKhanna, @rubysahotalib, @gary_srp, we just need change. Now.   Everyone's focus should be on prioritizing legislation that respects victims, including the families of slain police officers.

"'We’re talking about a guy who walked over, put the gun to my brother’s head, and pulled the goddamn trigger,' said Cory Baylis."   That's the memory the Baylis family, relatives of Constable Todd Baylis, who died in the line of duty, have to relive over and over again at repeated parole hearings.   We stand with everyone who is repeatedly victimized and re-traumatized by Canada's current parole system. The Baylis family, the French family, the Mahaffy family and so many others.   It's why we've sent letters to Secretary of State @rubysahotalib to demand change. Victims and their loved ones must come first, rather than the serious offenders who have no remorse for their crimes.

Mayor Chow has consistently been there for us during @TPACampbell's term as President. From welcoming new recruits at Police College graduations, to standing with us on some of our hardest days, she has shown deep respect for the service our members give to this city. Mayor Chow’s commitment to listening to our members about their safety and wellbeing, and her support of the Multi-year Hiring Plan, will be instrumental in creating a safer Toronto for everyone. The Multi-year Hiring Plan improves public safety, lowers Priority 1 response times, reduces 911 call times, and improves safety and working conditions for frontline members and the public. The Toronto Police Association sends our thoughts to the @BLVLPolice and the Jewish community following last night's atrocious attack at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.   We have connected with the President of the @BLVLPoliceAssoc to offer our full support after one of their members was shot while courageously putting their life on the line to protect this place of worship and the innocent individuals inside.   Such bravery does not go unnoticed. We wish the injured officer a full recovery and extend our support to their family and colleagues impacted by this tragic incident.   Everyone has the right to gather, worship and celebrate their religion safely and in peace. As communities come together during the holiday season, this principle cannot be overstated.   The increasing number of attacks against Jewish communities, motivated by hatred and violence, is disgusting and unacceptable.   Our members in Toronto continue to step up to help create safe environments, not only to reassure the public but to deter criminal acts and respond swiftly when incidents occur.   We are proud of our members and police members across the province who continue to put their lives on the line. Protecting the public, regardless of religion or background, continues to be a top priority.

Last week, the TPA had the privilege of attending @CanadaBTB's 5th Annual Champions of Change Awards Gala. It was a moving, reflective evening that brought people together to honour those we've lost and recognize the individuals who dedicate themselves to advocating for and supporting mental health in policing across Ontario. It is repellent to think that one of Canada's most notorious killers could ever be released on parole.  Paul Bernardo was jailed indefinitely, with the judge noting, 'You are a sexually sadistic psychopath. The likelihood of you being treated is remote in the extreme.' The TPA stands with the families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy, who are consistently revictimized by this absurd notion of possible freedom for a court-designated Dangerous Offender. We're looking to Secretary of State @rubysahotalib and the governing Liberals to implement necessary and long-overdue changes to Canada's parole system. Protecting victims and law-abiding citizens should always remain the priority. It is paramount that Paul Bernardo and others like him never be allowed to walk free.

Great work by our members getting four dangerous individuals and their firearms off the streets. Unfortunately, it once again seems like our members are the only ones in this fight as at least two of these people have previous convictions for firearms offences. Where is the responsibility for the judge who released one of them less than a year ago with a firearms prohibition? It was clearly ineffective. Our members will keep doing what’s needed to keep our streets safe and they will continue to be held accountable for the decisions they make. Sadly, we can’t say the same for others.

On #FirefightersNationalMemorialDay, the TPA remembers the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice and honours the families and colleagues who carry their legacy forward. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten. As fellow first responders, we stand with you, today and always.
