Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June. I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues.
My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven’t made it any easier. I’m still not quite back to 100%, but I’ve assured Leader Thune that, as I continue with physical therapy on the advice of my doctors, I will do my best to be present for tough votes when our Conference needs me.
Elaine and I are very grateful for all the continued well wishes from our fellow Kentuckians, and I’m glad to get back to more of business as usual on their behalf this month.

The executive order directs the Department of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to change Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The name change only applies to the federal government, and Congress uses Lake Ontario as the name for the lake in several laws.
The order comes amid a trade war between the United States and Canada. The United States has tariffed goods from Canada such as alcohol, lumber and dairy products. In response, Canada said it will tariff goods like steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, and paper.

Country Singer and national icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her nephew and head of security Bryan Seaver announced in a video statement.
“Dolly called me and said she wanted to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton, because after a life of wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest,” Seaver said. “Rest in peace Aunt Dolly, Aunt Granny, Gigi. May God Bless Dolly Parton, and may God bless you all, she will always love you.”
Parton refused the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice, due to Covid restrictions, her husband's health, and later said she would not accept one out of fear of appearing political. "But I don't work for those awards," she said. "It'd be nice but I'm not sure that I even deserve it. But it's a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it."
Aside from her music, Parton was also known for extensive philanthropy through her charitable organization, the Dollywood Foundation, which has supported educational programs, disaster relief efforts, and medical and scientific research."
“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Seaver said. “Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”

The trade war between the U.S. and Canada appears to be escalating as U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the U.S. would increase tariffs on “all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel” to 50% on January 1, 2027.

The announcement comes as the countries have increased tensions on trade. On Saturday, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, including lumber, dairy products, clothing and alcohol. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada would match the U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar,” with retaliatory duties set to begin on September 8. Though Canada has not officially released information on its tariff plans, Carney said the duties would target U.S. “steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics.”
