Ten years ago, one could easily count the African startups that raised venture capital in a single year.
In 2016, 77 startups raised $367 million in venture funding, according to Partech. Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya accounted for 79.4% of that funding. Financial inclusion attracted the largest share of capital at $206.3 million, or 56.2% of total funding, with fintech accounting for 19% of that investment.
By today’s standards, these numbers look almost impossibly small. But they captured a technology economy at the beginning of something.

Building African-language AI is easier than finding the data.
Vambo AI had access to the GPUs needed to train MORENA, its 1.5-billion-parameter model covering 12 African languages. But finding enough real African-language text was “close to impossible,” according to co-founder and CTO Isheanesu Misi.
MORENA was trained on 251.7 billion tokens, including 65.6 billion African-language tokens. Because real data was scarce, much of the training data was synthetic.
The challenge is particularly striking for languages such as isiNdebele and Nigerian Pidgin, which Misi said can have “next to no resources available” for AI development.

Nigeria wants more critical data stored at home. But as the CBN tightens localisation requirements for financial institutions and the government builds a broader cloud framework, a bigger question is emerging: can multiple regulators enforce data sovereignty without creating a costly compliance maze?
The issue is not simply localisation. It is about who regulates what, where their mandates overlap, and how businesses navigate requirements covering payment data, cloud infrastructure, backups and disaster recovery.

Truecaller has said any Nigerian can remove their phone number from its caller-identification service, following a Lagos High Court ruling that dismissed a privacy case brought by non-users of the platform.
The company told TechCabal its unlisting tool allows people who do not use Truecaller to request removal of their number and associated caller identity from its active searchable database.
The response follows TechCabal’s earlier report, which examined the legal dispute over how Truecaller processes the phone numbers and names of people who have not signed up for its service.
Truecaller said it will not suspend or redesign its Nigerian service as a result of the court’s decision.

A Lagos High Court has drawn a line that could complicate how digital platforms build products from other people’s contacts: one person’s permission to share a phonebook does not automatically give a company permission to process the personal data of everyone in it.
In a September 14, 2026, ruling seen by TechCabal, the court said Truecaller could not rely on a user’s consent to process the phone numbers of people in their contacts who had never used the app.

Nigerians spent ₦327 billion on petrol and diesel generators in 2024, almost twice what they spent on grid electricity.
With more than 80 million people still without electricity, solar mini-grids could help close the gap. But scaling them requires financing that can work with the realities of Nigeria’s market.
That’s where the new $300 million Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund comes in. Managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and Africa50, the fund aims to use public capital to de-risk distributed energy projects and attract institutional investment.

In 2016, African startups raised about $327 million in venture funding. The ecosystem was smaller, the cheques were different, the playbook was still being written, and many of the companies we now think of as part of Africa’s tech story were only getting started.
Ten years later, the landscape has changed dramatically.
So, what happened to the companies that helped build that early ecosystem? Which ones survived? Which ones evolved? Which ones disappeared?
