Mertens came in 0-5 against Coco, a significant upset there. Swiatek won 6-1, 6-3 vs Jovic so instead of Swiatek-Gauff like everyone expected, we will get Swiatek-Mertens instead.

Iga Swiatek will take on Iva Jovic in Beijing R16 This is a first ever meeting, should be some fun points. Its another match where you feel Iga pretty much has to win if she's going to make WTA Finals, Muchova has continued to win this week, as has Svitolina to maintain their leads.

Djokovic stated unlike the last few years when he qualified and skipped he would like to play in Turin this year, playing Shanghai off the back of the Beijing title. With Sinner out, he is currently in position, its hard to say if he'll be in this position next year, will be another year older so probably wants to make it possibly one last time and why not, played some really good tennis in Beijing.
🚨Novak Djokovic has confirmed he WILL play Shanghai. 🇨🇳 Djokovic: "I'm going to Shanghai tomorrow. I will be playing there and I am looking forward to it." ❤️

Unfortunately after evaluating the injury I sustained in my match in Tokyo my medical team and I have decided I should withdraw from Shanghai. I’m very sorry to everyone hoping to see me here, I can’t wait to be back next year! I’m hoping to be healthy and back on court soon 🙏🏼

De Minaur explains why he retired, still doesn't know how serious the injury is. "I felt something in my adductor. I don't know what it is yet. I need to have some more tests. My plan is to go to Shanghai and get the tests done." "Everything except the ending was really positive. There was some good tennis. I felt incredible. I'm taking a lot of confidence from this first week."

There's so much we don't know much about Sinner's knee but I sure have trouble reflexively blaming the calendar. He (smartly!) played no AO lead-ins, 1 event in Feb, no clay 500s, no Wimbledon lead-ins. Nine events in 6.5 months. That's what a scaled back schedule looks like.

Not the way Djokovic would've wanted to win a 7th Beijing title with a default in the Semifinals and a retirement in the Final, hopefully De Minaur is alright. 102nd overall career title and a well deserved one, no doubt played his best tennis since Australia this week.
A heartbreaking end 💔 Novak Djokovic claims his 7th Beijing title after Alex de Minaur retires whilst down 6-7 1-0, due to injury 😔 #ChinaOpen
