Palaeobio Msc from @BristolUni who specializes in 🦕 skin. Working at Edelman Fossil Park | Artist| Favorite dinosaurs=Spinosaurus+Diplodocus

Excited to announce that my second manuscript, “Fossilised Melanosomes Reveal Colour Patterning in A Sauropod Dinosaur” has been published in @royalsociety!! Diplodocus scales are complex and diverse, and it turns out their color patterning was even more so. A 🧵🦕 1/26

QUESTION FOR TYRANNOSAUR/THEROOOD PEOPLE. How do you think dryptosaurus would hunt?🤔🦖 I imagine it would use its arms to grapple it's prey but I want to hear directly from some experts what they think.

You know what’s an awesome Philly analog space that’s great for adults and kids (in a world being drowned in ai) except that Drexel just took it away from the public? #SaveTheAcademy of Natural Sciences! save-the-academy.org
In a world focused on scrolling, AI and technology, more people and places around Philly are embracing an unplugged life and curating analog experiences. What's your favorite way to unplug? billypenn.com/2026/10/01/phi…

Guess where the endling is held Yep, that's right, it's another Academy of Natural Sciences tweet (Pictured here with James Bond, the real one, long story)
Eskimo Curlew (Numenius borealis) ~ lived in: western Arctic (breeding); South American pampas (non-breeding) ~ cause of decline: destruction of prairies, hunting ~ last record: 1963 ~ status: critically endangered (possibly extinct) 📸: James St. John

"Diplo every tweet of yours can't be about the Academy of Natural Sciences" lmao watch me. Here's Academy entomologist Dr. Jon Gelhaus with a whole box full of Rocky Mountain locusts. Curators for the museum under Drexel leadership have been halved with no replacements
Rocky Mountain locusts (Melanoplus spretus) were a major part of the Eskimo curlew's diet They formed by far the largest swarms of any locust. One swarm in 1875 was the largest concentration of animals ever recorded In 1902 the last one was seen. It's unclear why they vanished

Dryptosaurus. Or "East coast T. rex" as an employee called it. Also life size. my favorite thing about dinos in museums is seeing how large they were in life. Dryptosaurus was found in a quarry just like the one at the museum, in the same county in NJ

The Sereno Edmontosaurus mummy last year made some big waves but I’ve noticed the rebuttal that was published almost immediately after has still been looked over. As part of a larger study, the “sail crest” was questioned, as decomposition could influence the appearance.-

UPDATE: Hearings were rescheduled to October 26. The lack of transparency and last minute changes is still incredibly unprofessional. Let's hope this doesn't happen a second time.
What the fuck do you mean the hearings for the academy closure are cancelled

"We don't want to be the dinosaur museum" is the ONE time they're not bullshitting, and it'll piss you off even more when you figure out why- The Drexel leadership have been moving to do a HARD pivot to boost their Computer Science rep, so they can capitalize on investing in AI
drexel wants you to think the academy closed because of declining attendance. And yet, they purposefully wanted to push themselves away from being the "dinosaur museum" in philadelphia, and cut programs like the live animal exhibits to appeal to adults......

For those of you following along at home, being the "dinosaur museum" wasn't a problem for the Academy right up until the the appointment of the first new president entirely under Drexel's stewardship

palaeoartists who dont realise what's missing from their work should read this imo
Lukewarm take: I think much of the amateur paleontological community would benefit from touching grass. Literally going outside and feeling dirt crunch under their feet. Running after a bug or perhaps a small lizard. Watching a bird in a tree—maybe even catching a fish or two!

Would it piss you guys off more if I told you I had approached the Academy on two separate occasions asking to give a talk on the science of dinosaur skin and color patterning, and was told "we don't really do that here", and was spoken too as if I was a high schooler 🫠
