We joined the @ConsumerFed and @TexasAppleseed in sending a detailed letter to the Insurance Commissioner, recommending that @TexasTDI include strong consumer representation on its Insurance Fraud Task Force and conduct a comprehensive and data-driven study of true insurance cost drivers. #txlege #insurance texaswatch.org/blog/insuranc…

"The reality is that Texas families are paying more for auto and homeowners insurance today because insurers have raised rates while reaping record profits. We need real insurance reform, not more so-called tort reform in Texas." #txlege @ExpressNews expressnews.com/opinion/comm…

What exactly are we paying for?! #insurance #txlege
Mid-Century Insurance Company of Texas denied 78% of homeowner claims last year. That's not a typo. Weiss Ratings analyzed 2025 data across the industry. Here's what they found: Mid-Century Insurance of Texas: 78% closed without payment. Lemonade Insurance: 64%. Citizens Property Insurance: 61%. Spinnaker Insurance: 61%. Across the 15 largest insurers studied, more than half of all homeowner claims were closed with zero payout. Nationally, 42% of all homeowner claims from all carriers ended the same way. A decade ago, the five largest insurance groups - Allstate, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, USAA - didn't pay on 36% of claims. Last year, that number crossed 44%. These aren't edge cases. This is the business model. When an insurer closes nearly 8 out of 10 claims without payment, the process is designed to find reasons to deny — and it's working. If you've received a denial, don't accept it as final. Get an independent assessment. Review your policy language. The numbers say your insurer's first answer is increasingly likely to be no.

"Ware Wendell, the executive director of Texas Watch, a citizen advocacy nonprofit, applauded Abbott’s letter, but said that 'strong laws' were still needed to regulate insurance companies. 'Lawmakers need to focus like a laser on the conduct of insurance companies after years of double-digit rate increases and record profits,' he said." #txlege @HoustonChron @megankimble houstonchronicle.com/politic…

“'When there has been a tragedy like this where a little girl has died, you would think that regulators would swarm that office the next day, and here it seems that there were months of delay,' Wendell said." #txlege #safety @startelegram star-telegram.com/news/local…
