It is the most extreme humanitarian crisis in the world right now, as far as I can see, the gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Not a word of protest.’ ‘Where was your indignation when we played [Afghanistan]? England wouldn’t play them, South Africa wouldn’t play them, New Zealand wouldn’t play them. The great humanitarians in Ireland had absolutely no difficulty. We’re hypocrites.’

Where I live in Brussels, anarchy is already here. Listen to this utter madness: there's an open air drug market in front of my kids' school. All-day open drug dealing, occasional raids, shootings, bullets through the school windows, bombs through letterboxes of the drug families on the adjacent streets, bundles of cash and bags of drugs hidden under cars, was of cash sometimes blowing in the wind, stuck in climbing plants.. there's a drive-through service, a lookout system with code words shouted all over the square when the cops are coming, intimidation, drugs hidden in kids slide, young boys on scooters whizzing around dropping off new supplies and taking away big bags of cash... you're not able to even use your phone when you walk past or you risk having it yanked out of your hand (there are boys watching for filmers)... almost all of the most risky jobs are done by asylum seekers with no papers picked up from the local train station, they're let go straight away after being arrested etc. This has been going on for years and it's getting worse but nobody can sell their houses and escape. Any effort to do something about it is thwarted by leftie saviours who want to hug-the-violence-out (many of whom don't even live here). If you attribute agency to any of the people involved, you're a fascist. If you voice any support for the authorities efforts to fix the problem, you're a fascist. So we all just have to put up with it and hope none of us gets killed. Anyway, in the neighbourhood chat group recently there's a message about a nice little activity that will help -- temporarily -- "occupy" the square (it's all we can do). The idea is that next week, on a certain day, from 7pm-10pm we'll all pull a chair and/or table outside and have a drink or dinner in front of the houses on the square, so that the flow of drug traffic will be disrupted a bit (customers don't like being watched when they buy drugs in front of a primary school, it makes them feel bad). A little spot of very civil and convivial disobedience. The first response to the message was "I don't like this surveillance of people", it's a type of "social control", and it's "accusatory". Nobody responds. Next message is someone from the municpality "eeeeh guys if you're going to put chairs out on the sidewalk you need to inform the authorities and the emergency services, they need to know" It's a literal open-air drug market. The drug dealers have their own chairs from which they sell drugs (it's very tiring). I'm pretty sure they don't have permission from the authorities for either of those activities. Most importantly, though, the message is clear: if you participate in this "accusatory surveillance-based social control", you're a fascist. So it's unlikely anyone will do it.

The Finnish government is dismantling the NGOcracy. No more state funding for “advocacy” NGOs — only those that provide services will continue to be supported. This is bad news for some essential awareness-raising NGOs who represent the truly underrepresented but it’s GREAT NEWS otherwise because it’s leading to stuff like this: Helsinki Pride is cutting its youth programme. Nice.

What a shocking piece of journalism. @Nick_Delehanty loses a business that employed people, and the @IrishTimes decides to kick him while he is down, branding him a “failed election candidate” and attaching several other negative labels, including “anti-multiculturalism,” which is not even an accurate description of his position. Nick has written extensively about government overspending, the cost of IPAS, the people becoming millionaires from Ireland’s immigration system and many other important issues. Yet those stories receive little or no attention from the mainstream media. His business folds, however, and suddenly it becomes a national story. This is the Irish media at its worst. Go after the messenger, ignore the message and celebrate when a dissenting voice suffers.

As I’ve said before, I’m not English. I’m proud to be British. My family and ancestors have a link to Britain which spans centuries. But in no way are we English. Yes, I was born in England, speak English and support the England football team. And indeed, I love England and the English people. But to say I’m English is to take a ‘laissez-faire, anything-goes’ attitude to ethnicity, citizenship and identity. It also denies me my Asian heritage. The liberals (many of them in today’s Conservative Party) take this cosmopolitan approach to Englishness. They’re terrified of being called racist so they say that anyone, as long as they’re born here, can be English. I take the conservative approach. Englishness is an ethnicity. There have been English people for centuries and we need to recognise this more if we are to start taking a more muscular approach to citizenship and nationality. And no, it’s not racist to say this. Other countries have no qualms in limiting who can be part of their citizenry and use ethnicity and culture as criteria. Here, the dogma of multiculturalism has been so corrosive that some people don’t actually know who we are anymore.

This is the state of the UK at the moment.
