25 years ago today… America watched as the Taliban refused U.S demands to hand over Osama Bin Laden and the Al Qaeda network peacefully. President Bush offered peace to prevent war. But the Taliban didn’t listen.

25 years ago today, President George W. Bush launched Operation Enduring Freedom as a response to 9/11. Bush gave the Taliban 2 weeks to comply with his demands. And they failed. They chose to protect Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

Václav Havel believed that truth was better than fear, freedom was worth fighting for, and Europe’s future belonged to everyone. He devoted his life to those convictions and helped change the course of history. On what would have been his 90th birthday, I’m remembering my friend with gratitude for his courage, his love of our common humanity, and the work we did together to bring the Czech Republic into NATO and build a Europe no longer divided. We also shared a love of music. So today, I’m playing a few notes in his honor. Happy birthday, my friend. The world could use more of your spirit.

We’ve spent decades working to lower the price of HIV medicines and expand access to prevention and treatment. Country ownership is the goal. But a deadline isn't a transition plan. Cheaper medicines mean nothing if they never reach people. What kind of country are we if we knowingly allow treatment to be interrupted, prevention to stop, and people to be left to die? We should be building for the possibility of tomorrow. Destroying decades of hard work to score political points carries a cost measured in human lives. And no perceived, short-term political victory is worth that. washingtonpost.com/world/202…

Today, President George W. Bush welcomed former political prisoner Pastor Ezra Jin to the Bush Institute. Pastor Jin was the founding pastor of the Zion Church in Beijing, which grew into one of China’s largest networks of unregistered Christian churches. In October 2025, Pastor Jin and nearly 30 of his fellow Christian leaders were imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for broadcasting sermons online after officials shut down the church’s physical location in 2018. He was held for nearly nine months before his release in July. Pastor Jin and President Bush discussed Pastor Jin’s family, his imprisonment, and the house church movement in China. President Bush spoke about his concern for prisoners of conscience in China, including some he painted in his new book, The Call of Freedom: Pastor Wang Yi, Gulshan Abbas, Joshua Wong, and Jimmy Lai.
