The Bible is incredible. Just think: 31,102 chapters with 1,189 verses in 66 books written by about 40 different people over something like 1,500 years produced a volume so coherent and consistent with its narrative, only God could have written it.
He did-and every page still matters.
In the story of redemption, from the promise to restore the "very good" creation of Genesis 1 all the way to Jesus' promise to come soon in Revelation 22, one theme features prominently in its execution: covenant. We remember the obvious stories: God walked down the aisle to cut the covenant with Abram (GEN. 15). He set the prismatic rainbow over us as a sign of His promise not to flood the earth again- reminding the human race in Noah's day they need not live in fear of repeated trauma (GEN. 9:13). He led Jacob's children from slavery to Sinai for their wedding (EXO. 24:3-8). He bound Himself to David's lineage and legacy for the ultimate King's immutable reign (2 SAM. 7). He bled at the Place of the Skull to secure the provisions first promised to Abraham (HEB. 13:20).
But then, there are whispers woven through the text for those willing to draw near enough to hear them. One such offering is found in PSALM 25, an incredible meditation on the glory of friendship with our Maker. David's lyrics describe the King of the Universe as a patient Father, a kind King, and a humble Judge willing and committed to leading us on the path of life if we'll follow Him.
And interestingly, that path of fidelity leads us to a revelation of....yep, covenant. "ADONAl relates intimately with those who fear Him; He makes them know His covenant" (verse 14, CJB). When we seek Him with our whole heart, we find Him (JER. 29:13). And when we find Him, we find His covenant. It is His prize, hidden in plain sight all through Scripture and illuminated by the Helper (JOHN 14:26).
We love covenant because we love the One who makes and keeps them. His fidelity to His word is our only hope, and so we cling to that same word and walk in fidelity by the power of the Spirit.
If you want to peer into the mysteries of this gorgeous covenant, pull up a chair with us here at THE EMMAUS TABLE. We spend a lot of time mining this out.
And, we even made a film about it (with more to come). WATCH COVENANT AND CONTROVERSY: THE GREAT REIGN in free 4K on YouTube today (link in thread).
We encourage you to spend some time in PSALM 25 over the next week. We certainly will be.
