Nigerians must make a conscious effort to study Omoyele Sowore @sowore the right way before judging him, condemning him or dismissing his ambition to become the President of Nigeria. Sowore did not suddenly wake up one morning and decide to become a politician because he wanted power or access to government privileges. His journey of activism goes back decades, from his days as a Students’ Union Government President at the University of Lagos, and he has continued to challenge corruption, bad governance, oppression, injustice and a political system that has continued to fail millions of Nigerians. Unfortunately, many Nigerians have never taken the time to genuinely understand the man they criticize. Some judge him from short videos on social media, some listen to what political opponents say about him, while others allow tribal, religious and political sentiments to determine their opinion of him. There are also people who hear the word “Revolution” and immediately conclude that Sowore is calling for violence, without making any serious effort to understand the political and social transformation he is advocating. You do not have to agree with everything Omoyele Sowore says or does. That is the beauty of democracy. But before rejecting him completely, Nigerians should study his history, his activism, his political philosophy, his speeches, his policies and the kind of country he has consistently advocated for. They should examine his record and compare his proposed alternative with the system that has produced decades of poverty, insecurity, corruption, unemployment, inequality and suffering. The most important question Nigerians should ask themselves is not whether Sowore is too outspoken, too radical or too confrontational for their liking. The bigger question is whether Nigerians are genuinely satisfied with the leadership they have repeatedly voted for and the condition in which the country finds itself today. If the answer is no, then Nigerians must be courageous enough to examine alternative leadership instead of automatically returning to the same political class and expecting a different result. Sowore may not be perfect, and no human being is. But dismissing him without properly understanding him is not wisdom. Nigerians owe themselves the responsibility of studying the man beyond social media propaganda, political attacks, tribal sentiments, religious sentiments and hearsay. Study Omoyele Sowore. Study his journey from student activism to journalism and political activism. Study what he has been fighting for and why he has continued to challenge those in power even when doing so has come with enormous personal consequences. Study his vision for Nigeria and then make your own informed judgment. A country cannot experience meaningful change when its citizens refuse to examine new ideas and continue to judge political alternatives without understanding them. Nigeria needs citizens who can think independently, question authority and demand accountability from whoever seeks their votes. For me, that is why Nigerians must study Omoyele Sowore the right way.
