(5/6) Legislature is effectively asking DOJ to define what qualifies as acceptable detection technology. Those policy choices, not just technical details, will determine which products can be sold in California. Yes. Really.

(4/3) Someone intent on violating the law can simply obtain equipment outside California, build one from components, or use open-source alternatives.

(3/6) California already criminalizes illegal manufacture of firearms. AB 2047 shifts regulation from bad actors to general-purpose manufacturing equipment used overwhelmingly for lawful purposes.

(2/6) Bill assumes that software can reliably distinguish firearm components from millions of legitimate mechanical parts. Geometry alone doesn't provide that distinction. False positives & negatives are mentioned, and DOJ is being asked to certify technology that is ok w/ that.
