Before... and after. Interceptor 006 has been operational in the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala, since June 2023. In this catch alone, over 210,000 kg of trash were stopped from reaching the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea.

Baranquilla, and the recently announced project in Santa Marta, mark the start of our work in Colombia: the 13th country we'll be operating in. Barranquilla is part of our 30 Cities Program to stop up to one-third of all global river plastic by 2030... The composition of trash extracted from the ocean differs from what we catch in rivers, as does the ownership of the catch. Due to these factors, our role in creating value for these two streams also differs, but we always aim to sort and recycle the plastic and manage non-recyclable waste according to local regulations. Here's what happened at The Ocean Cleanup in August: 💠 We announced the expansion of our operations to our 13th country, Colombia. We signed an MoU with the City of Santa Marta to deploy Interceptors in the Río Manzanares and Río Gaira, to stop plastic before it reaches the Caribbean Sea. This is part of our 30 Cities Program, which aims to prevent up to one-third of all river plastic entering the ocean by 2030. 💠 In Panama City, heavy rains brought a huge amount of trash into the waterways. But Interceptors 024 and 025 were there to stop it from reaching Panama Bay. 💠 Similarly, in Jamaica, Interceptors 011, 013, and 015 prevented tons of waste from reaching the Caribbean Sea. 💠 In the Dominican Republic, an upgrade to Interceptor 004 is coming soon, with a new 400-meter barrier to capture more plastic and invasive water hyacinths. 💠 Our team just returned after 6 weeks in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, testing our Smart Steering Strategy. We’ll be sharing what we learned soon.

Productive summer for our Interceptors in Jamaica:

The video is intended to help illustrate the reality of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the scale of the challenge we're working to address. The Patch is over twice the size of Texas and is more akin to a "plastic soup" than a physical island of plastic. Plastic continues to enter the ocean through rivers, lost fishing gear, and other sources, while ocean currents concentrate it in gyres. That's why our approach focuses on both preventing new plastic from entering the ocean through initiatives like our 30 Cities Program and reducing lost fishing gear, while also removing plastic that's already there. Through this comprehensive strategy, we're aiming to clean up 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution by 2040. Ambitious but achievable.
