🧵A shopper orders a dress in four sizes, keeps the one that fits, returns the rest. Nothing about that transaction looks like fraud. Legally, none of it is. But scale that instinct up, and you get one of payments' fastest-growing, least-visible loss categories: first-party fraud 👉️ buff.ly/SP86Rky

3/ The cost: refund fraud alone may be costing UK online retailers up to £5.76 billion a year (@portsmouthuni). And it's a double loss ▶️ the goods are gone, AND the money's already back with the customer. The bigger problem: it hides inside ordinary returns and chargebacks, so most businesses can't even isolate it to build a case for fixing it.

4/ What's coming next makes it messier: @Visa reported AI-driven traffic to US retail sites up 4,700%+ in a year. Soon, merchants face a dispute nobody's ready for ▶️ 'I didn't authorise that; my AI agent did.' Sometimes true. Sometimes a lie. Almost no merchant today can tell the difference.

.@PineLabs 🤝 @googlecloud tackle the 3 real barriers: discoverability (AI can't recommend what it can't read), payments (P3P via UPI), and governance (Grantex for compliance). 🗨️ Read more: buff.ly/6i44mEp

🧵 Most banks have run dozens of AI pilots by now. The pattern is always the same: works in test, gets presented to leadership, then stalls. Six months later, it's technically 'active' with a handful of users ▶️ one of hundreds of frozen pilots across the bank. Here's why, and what actually breaks the cycle 👉️ buff.ly/s4bF9qu

3/ The fix isn't a core-banking overhaul. It's composable modernisation: pick one capability that needs an upgrade, connect it cleanly to existing systems, then move to the next. Each upgrade strengthens the same shared data foundation instead of starting from scratch.

4/ The best first AI use case isn't the most ambitious one; it's the narrowest: AI output that plugs directly into a decision someone already makes, just faster and better-informed (e.g., flagging suspicious transactions straight to the fraud team). Get that right, and the second use case isn't another pilot. It's an extension of something that already works.

🧵 A bank can build the best fraud model in the world and still lose to a scam that started on a platform it doesn't own, moved through a telecom network it doesn't control, and used an identity it never saw until the money was already gone. So why does liability still fall almost entirely on the bank? 👉️ buff.ly/VZ2xAj5

3/ Where collaboration is actually working: the UK's Stop Scams Blocked SIMs programme shared ~2.5M records, contributing to action against ~5,000 accounts. The Meta-NatWest-Metro Bank pilot (FIRE) helped remove ~20,000 scammer-controlled accounts in 6 months. In Finland, banks + telecoms intercepted over half of the €148M that criminals attempted to steal in 2025.

4/ The uncomfortable closing question of this 3-part series: maybe the bank isn't even the right unit of analysis anymore. Fix one part of the system, and criminals move upstream. The fraud journey doesn't respect organisational boundaries. Neither should the defence.
