Steven Spielberg and Holly Hunter on Gene Hackman’s ferocious electrifying performance in The French Connection—a masterclass in controlled chaos and intensity that defined ‘70s cinema. One of the greatest to ever do it. A true giant of the screen. He will be missed❤️

It is arguably the most important document in the history of the Premier League. At 40 pages, it details why Manchester City have been found guilty of almost all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League financial regulations. But what are the key takeaways? @JamesHorncastle has run through the core decision, provided context and highlighted the most important parts in detail. This is the document that shook football — annotated. 🔗 nyti.ms/4hGgE60

While it would take until 2022 for Manchester City to top the football world in revenues, their growth during the years they were breaching rules was huge. In 2008-09, the last before the disguised funding scheme commenced, City’s £87million revenue was just 25 per cent of Real Madrid’s. Nine years later that figure was 75 per cent, and City were football’s fifth-highest earners. Strip out the £135m in 'disguised funding' that year, and they would have been 10th. In part two of our series looking into the financial scandal, @CWeatherspoon_ explains how City's commercial operation mushroomed and had a profound effect on the club. 🔗 nyti.ms/47bo1fy

⚖️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹 Based on reports of Man City’s proposed appeal, its “irrefutable proof” (which the Commission refuted and called “concocted”) asserts that state-owned sponsors received state funding to help pay the sponsor contracts… and that this money was not paid by the owner company, ADUG. If Man City could prove this (and the PL could not prove Man City and the sponsors were Related Parties) then this would absolve Man City of the most serious charges that resulted in PSR breaches. The challenge they faced with this at the Commission is that they handed the PL originals of all the emails and other documents that could be found in the Football Leaks, which show in no uncertain terms that the money was paid by ADUG and that they are Related Parties. Because there would have been no reason to lie in the emails, and there are so many, from so many senior people “in the know”… they become incredibly credible, reliable, cogent evidence. As such, Man City presenting counter-factual evidence when they DID have a reason to lie was always going to be treated as concocted unless they could mitigate for the emails with an innocent explanation. Their attempt to explain the emails as “false assumptions” was never going to be considered plausible given the reasons above. In the comments below, I will put a thread of linked posts from old analysis that afford evidence of payments by ADUG and that Man City and the sponsors were Related Parties. Given the individuals involved, the statements made, the volume of them, over the length of time… you can decide for yourself whether you believe it plausible that all these people were merely “confused”… 🧵
