Gears of War: E-Day has sold 120K copies on Steam for nearly $7M (
@alineaanalytics estimates)
It’s sold under 20K in the last six weeks despite launching this week in early access, so the pre-launch curve is soft (but it’s increasing a bit).
Gears is a far more niche IP than Call of Duty (450K Steam copies pre-sold), of course. Launch-aligned, E-Day has already sold more than double what Halo: Campaign Evolved did on Steam, but it’s well behind Wardogs (which was on 567K at this point pre-launch, versus Gears‘ 120K, and roughly triple the revenue).
Realistically, in this window, 1M on Steam this year for E-Day is a stretch, and most of the Xbox revenue will be eaten up by Game Pass. That said, some superfans will cough up the extra $30 to play earlier.
In my view, they shouldn't have cancelled that PlayStation port. It would have added some much-needed extra revenue, the port was reportedly already in the works, and Gears isn't necessarily a console-seller anymore.
I can see a port coming at some point.
