Bit of a break from politics. Here's a wonderful & very emotional clip from Band of Brothers.
WWII has ended. The German forces have surrendered and a German general asks permission to give a parting address to his soldiers.
The men listen as the General's words are translated by an American soldier. Its interesting to observe the faces of the allied troops, as they slowly realise that the words of the German General apply just as well to themselves.
Then the unspoken thought arises. Have they been fighting and killing their own brothers?
The overall scene is a brilliant comment on who really suffers from wars. Its a very succinct and understated message that has more impact for the subdued manner by which it is conveyed.
IMHO a wonderful piece of screenplay.

To win govt, Labour's Chris Hipkins needs the legacy media on his side.
Of course most of them are raving socialist loons anyway, but just to make sure of their support, Hipkins has promised them he will revive the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill.
This legislation forces digital platforms to pay a fee to any legacy media outlet they link to. In Australia this fed around A$200–250 million a year to media. (Albanese's Labor govt still gave them another $180 million anyway.)
If the digital companies don't just decide to boycott NZ media, revenue raised here would be far less. The sector would still most likely need other sources of support. Which means you- the taxpayer.
Legacy media already gets a large part of your earnings. Radio NZ for example receives a $66 million grant. Another $100 million goes to TVNZ, Three, Sky, RNZ (again), NZME and Stuff for content creation.
You can bet your house Labour has already, behind the scenes, promised to increase these handouts. As well as re-introducing the Fair News Bill.
So you can see why NZ's media is so solidly behind Labour.
Democracies fall into dysfunction when the critical fourth estate is being bribed. Crooked media is a big part of the old maxim-
"You can vote your way into socialism, but you'll have to fight your way out"

Notice how many businesses and govt departments etc use the 'a' word. It is not benign or neutral or random - it is a deliberate political move. It is chipping away at our national identity and an insult to those who came before us.

Mr Luxon says he prefers New Zealand, because its a name that has global marketing advantages worth $billions.
His answer was in reality a ruse to avoid voicing the truth.
Aotearoa is a made up name, historically and geologically unsuitable, and its use has never been ratified by the NZ people.
It is popular with an elitist arrogant clique similar to the group that changed Rhodesia to Zimbabwe. First they called it Rhodesia Zimbabwe and then gradually let the Rhodesia part slip until Zimbabwe became accepted.
Roughly about the time the country transformed itself from a thriving western style democracy into a Marxist one party state and an economic and social basket case.
Maori separatists, bribed media and politically driven academics, again all Marxists of course, are trying to change New Zealand's name in the same manner.
It is a travesty that "Aotearoa" is being used on NZ passports and in other official documents when no binding law has been passed to allow this.
They won't hold a referendum because they know they will lose.
NZ First leader Winston Peters has introduced a members bill to confirm New Zealand as the country's official name.
PM Luxon should take a much firmer stand.

According to Seven News 263,000 Australians have left the country this year. A 13% rise over last year.
Since Anthony Albanese's Labour govt took office four years ago, more than 1.4 million migrants have poured into our country. Driving up housing costs, straining public services, and fuelling a cost of living crisis.
The country is now $1 trillion in debt. With interest on that debt costing taxpayers $120 million per day.
A new national poll reveals 68% of the country think it is moving in the wrong direction.
Albanese's own net approval rating is crashing towards minus-27 as the economy, inflation, housing market, productivity, cost-of-living pressures and interest rate pain is all expected to worsen.
Really, who are the fools who would elect a Labour govt in New Zealand in the expectation that will improve things here?
They must be blind to what is happening in Australia and so many other countries where the left have power.

As a secondary point, National party leader Mr Luxon might look at a few of the things Albanese/ Australian Labor are doing and think about why he is struggling to defeat Hipkins in preferred PM and net approval ratings. He should be streets ahead.

Left out bribing legacy media with $153.5 million of taxpayers’ money. A direct attack on the principles of democracy and also perverting the role of the 4th estate in holding govt to account. Hipkins is no doubt planning the same bribery in NZ. Its why they're cheering for him.
