STATEMENT FROM REV. AL SHARPTON ON GRAND JURY DECISION IN THE DEATH OF NOLAN WELLS

In 1974, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and I held a press conference at Madison Square Garden to announce that he would perform a July 4th concert at MSG for the National Youth Movement, an organization I founded in 1971 when I was just 16 years old. I was only 19 years old when we stood together at that press conference.

Here in Arlington, Texas today for the MS NOW live event, which is why I’m not physically at the NAN Saturday Action Rally in Harlem this morning. I still made sure to remote in and be part of the rally, speaking live to all of our supporters and partners joining us online and in person at the House of Justice. Thank you to everyone who continues to show up, stand with us, and be part of this work. Whether I’m in Harlem or on the road, the mission continues.

Great workout this morning here in Texas. A long day ahead, but I’m focused, ready, and on my grind. You have to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually for the work ahead. No excuses. At a time when world leaders are gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, the world is watching how America handles the very freedoms we have long challenged other nations to uphold. The First Amendment cannot depend on whether those in power like the questions being asked or the coverage they receive. Just finished a meaningful meeting with His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, while he is here in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. We spoke about the importance of Africa having a strong seat at the table, strengthening the relationship between Africa and the diaspora, and the responsibility we all have to help build, invest in, and uplift the Motherland. President Boakai and his staff were gracious and welcoming, and I truly appreciated their hospitality and the time we were able to spend together. Liberia has an important voice on the global stage, and this is a moment for partnership, progress, and action.
