🇸🇸 President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government today, ostensibly to prepare for December elections. This is being presented as adherence to the 2018 peace agreement. It is not. The agreement committed all signatories to power-sharing and urgent reforms to dismantle South Sudan’s kleptocratic governance system. Instead, Kiir acted unilaterally, without the consent of the other signatories to the peace agreement. Worse, the prerequisites for credible elections are missing: no census, no permanent constitution, no voter register, and no independent elections commission. A new investigation from @Global_Witness exposes the extent of Mondelez’s efforts to weaken or delay the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), even as many of its peers support implementation. Mondelez, the company that owns brands including Cadbury, Milka, Toblerone and Oreos, is one of the largest cocoa buyers in the world. We strongly support the EUDR and its focus on transparency and traceability in supply chains, which are critical tools for protecting forests, including the Congo Basin rainforest. Zimbabwe’s sovereign wealth fund, Mutapa Investment Fund, has released its full 2025 accounts, providing information on a controversial deal that we've warned warrants parliamentary scrutiny. Still on the books: the $1.9 billion in Treasury Bills issued to the mystery shareholders who sold Mutapa a 35% stake in Kuvimba Mining House. The stake was purchased based on a $3.2 billion valuation of Kuvimba, with Mutapa financing the $1.1 billion purchase through a government loan. That valuation deserves scrutiny. Kuvimba had previously been valued by the government at $2 billion in 2021 and $1.5 billion in 2022, before its implied valuation jumped around the 2023 transaction. Mutapa’s first annual report also received a qualified audit opinion, with auditors warning that its subsidiaries were not measured at fair value when initially recognized. If Kuvimba was overvalued, the consequences are not only in the past.
