I know @s8box has a bad rep right now but I honestly recommend it for indie devs!!! Making Puddle Pond here means people can play it really early in development, give us tasty feedback while we’re still making it, AND s&box pays us based on how much people play it. Is nice

I can actually play alyx now, still some minor issues to work out like how easily the system is brought up but it does seem legitimately playable hah. Also swapped it to emulating index controllers so the position/rotation is easier to make sense of. Some cursed control issues...
Got a lil further- wrote a SteamVR driver for it, man doing that on a device running SteamVR is really hard, constant SteamVR restarts, remote desktop was a godsend for this...

@SadlyItsBradley is this how you played alyx on the apple vision pro? It's very cursed

I found my old Leap IR 170 hand tracking module and slapped it on the front of my steam frame- after some driver hassle it seems to actually work!

70 degree fov on the latest meta glasses seem dogshit btw, I don't understand how anyone can accept less than 110 in VR these days. Awful move. Not including controllers I can sorta forgive because their hand tracking is really solid, but that fov... Unforgivable... At $1300 too!

Honestly the video here doesn't do justice how terrible it feels to have so much of your fov taken away since it records at 16:9 but you should try it yourself in any VR game to see- it's a percentage of your total FOV so you'll have to do some math to match it to 70Hx66V.

My math on this worked out to ~59% of 118 degrees (steam frame's measured FOV rather than the spec sheet's) for horizontal and 56% for vertical, it's legitimately claustrophobia inducing to me.

I participated in this jam with a team! I was acting as an artist/programmer bridge and did a whole bunch of creature models/animations for our entry "Critter Crawl"! Play it here: sbox.game/apetavern/critter_… #gamedev #sbox
We're still game jammin' (nominations start this Friday!), the party system is bigger and better, and demos / cameras / video exports have gotten even easier. Read more on the newest update: sbox.game/news/update-26-09-… 👈

I also did these two little fellas, there were other creature/player models I haven't shown here but they were made by another artist on the team ( @eriksaend )

The background and environment style was done by @Jammie3D with @eriksaend helping out with enviro models here and there too.

store.steampowered.com/hardw… It's finally up! Honestly, the price is less bad than I thought. Climbey is Steam Frame Verified for on-device play, too! I'll probably do some sort of tips and tricks video on the frame soon.

The point here isn't "web browser windows in VR" btw, Quest can do that fine, but on Frame you can replace the web browser windows with any other Arm64 Linux apps you can imagine. I'll see if I can think of a more interesting demonstration of this without pissing off Valve soon..
A lot of people forget the Steam Frame is running a proper PC OS, you can do stuff like this entirely self-contained with no PC connection at all, just some chromium windows on-device. Doing stuff like this is some of my favorite casual VR use. I hope it releases soon!
