On June 16, 2025, Brent Delaney was driving to work in Alton when he saw his neighbour Ron Miller’s home on fire. Faced with that burning building, knowing that someone was inside, he pulled over and went in to try to help. When he saw danger, he did not hesitate to act. Sadly, neither Mr. Delaney nor Mr. Miller made it out. In true Bluenoser spirit, Brent’s first instinct was to help his neighbour. It was an act of extraordinary courage and selflessness. Mr. Delaney’s heroism has been recognized posthumously by the Carnegie Hero Fund, which this week awarded him the Carnegie Medal for Heroism. It is a well-deserved tribute to a man who, in the face of incredible danger, acted without hesitation to help a neighbour. I’m grateful to see his heroism recognized, while saddened by his family’s loss.

This fall session, our government passed new laws to protect workers and put families first. That includes: ✅ Lowering the threshold so more workers qualify for overtime pay ✅ Making sure workers keep 100% of the tips they earn by banning tip theft. We will keep working every day to protect your paycheque and build up Nova Scotia.

I've known Frank Bowen to be an active and dedicated member of his church and community. He’s always been a kind person to me and many. It was great to stop by for a visit yesterday. Please join me in congratulating Frank on his 100th birthday!

It’s Rail Safety Week, and we want everyone across Nova Scotia to stay safe around train tracks. Being rail smart is simple: 🛑 Stop a safe distance away from tracks and crossings. 🚊 Look both ways for approaching trains. 🚂 Listen for train horns and signals. We can all do our part to protect our communities. Be a role model, share these tips with your family, and always report any unsafe situations near the tracks to local authorities. Let’s look out for one another and keep Nova Scotia safe!

Today, we stand with everyone living with this condition, their loved ones, and the dedicated caregivers who support them every single day. This week is National Legion Week. This year also marks 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion. For a full century, Legions have supported our Veterans and their families. Across Nova Scotia, our local branches do so much for our communities. They help us remember the service of those who defended our country, bring neighbours together, and keep our towns strong. Earlier this week, our government announced a progress report on our housing plan. Three years in, Nova Scotia is beating our goals across the board: ✅ Paved the way for nearly 80,000 new homes (Target: 41,200) ✅ Improved affordability for over 25,000 families (Target: 17,250) ✅ Cleared the path for 7,000+ affordable and supportive units (Target: 5,000) ✅ Delivered rent supplements to over 15,500 households We will keep moving fast to make sure every Nova Scotian has a safe, affordable place to live. Today is National Hunting, Trapping, and Fishing Heritage Day. Nova Scotia has a long, proud tradition of hunting, trapping, and fishing. It built our province. We are keeping those traditions strong by protecting our outdoors and expanding access, including opening up Sunday hunting during the general deer hunting season so families can spend more time together in nature. Let's celebrate our heritage and enjoy the great outdoors!

This week, 79 Emergency Health Services (EHS) team members were recognized for 20 or more years of service keeping Nova Scotians safe. Together, these award recipients have dedicated a total of 2,075 years to providing emergency care, supporting our health system, and saving lives across the province. I want to extend a special congratulations to Kevin MacMullin for reaching an incredible 45-year milestone, the only recipient to reach 45 years this year, and to Pamela MacLennan of Beaver Cove, recipient of the Tom Dobson Award for her outstanding contributions to paramedicine. Thank you to all 79 recipients, including Kevin, Pamela, and every dedicated team member honoured earlier this week, for your commitment to protecting our communities and taking care of Nova Scotians when they need it most.

Today, we honour Military Family Appreciation Day and say a heartfelt thank you to the families behind our heroes. Serving our country is a team effort. While our service members work hard to keep us safe, their families carry a heavy load at home. Moving around, spending long times apart, and worrying about loved ones adds real stress to a household. Military families make huge sacrifices for our province and our country every single day. We see your strength, we appreciate your service, and we are deeply proud to support you. Thank you for everything you do.

Young people are choosing to build their futures right here in Nova Scotia and our MOST tax refund is helping them do it. Since 2022, nearly 18,000 applications have been approved, putting over $63 million back into the pockets of young workers in skilled trades, healthcare, and film. Whether it’s saving for a first home, starting a career in the trades, or practicing nursing in our communities, we're supporting the next generation of workers our province needs.

Canada is a sovereign country. We will decide who we trade with and how we build our future. It’s of no surprise that President Trump is now lashing out at the prospect of Canada increasing our trade ties with Europe. His response is next level fear of missing out. He has an option: stop being a bully and maybe you’ll get invited back to the party. I am proud that Canada is spreading our wings. Nova Scotia has a long history of trade with the world. Two major Canadian banks - Scotiabank and RBC - were founded in our province to help our entrepreneurs, traders and explorers do business with the world. We have a long history of trade and travel with Europe specifically. Expanding access for Canadian goods to European markets is a good thing, as is strengthening our defence ties with the region. Nova Scotia will always value our friendship with the American people. We value our historic ties to New England in particular. But this friendship cannot mean dependence on a country whose administration has become increasingly unpredictable towards its allies. We’re ready to work with Europe and every reliable partner who wants what Nova Scotia has to offer. We will not be bullied by those who look to oppress us. My focus will continue to be on protecting our future and building Nova Scotia.

Today, we honour the brave heroes of the Battle of Britain. 86 years ago, Allied pilots, including Canadians, took to the skies to defend freedom. They were brave and they stood tall against overwhelming odds to protect our future. We will always remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the legacy of service they left behind for not just Britain, but the world. Lest we forget.
