The deaths of Cora, Dawson, and Callan were an act of unspeakable cruelty, and no amount of public sympathy, pink clothing, or commentary about postpartum struggle can launder that fact. You can acknowledge that stay-at-home mothers face crushing isolation, sleep deprivation, and mental health crises without treating the strangling of three children as something that deserves a fan club. Those two truths are not mutually exclusive. What is exclusive is pretending that “she was suffering” cancels the moral reality of what was done to those kids. Anyone who has publicly sided with Lindsay Clancy as if she is the primary victim in this story has chosen to look away from three small bodies in a basement. Mental illness can explain a collapse. It does not make the killing of children anything other than evil, and it does not entitle anyone to applause for standing with the person who did it.

For the next 12 days, I’m going to tell the story of Benghazi. Not just what happened during those 13 hours on September 11 and 12, 2012. I’m going back before that night. Back to the warnings, back to the attacks that had already happened. Back to what was going on in Benghazi months before 4 Americans were killed. Some of what I’m going to share is already documented in congressional investigations and government records. Some of it comes from people who have spent years digging into what happened afterward. And some of it I know for one simple reason. I was there. I was serving on the CIA’s GRS Annex Security Team in Benghazi in 2012. I was there while the security situation was getting worse. I was there when the U.S. compound was attacked months before September 11. I was there while Benghazi was becoming more dangerous and the warning signs kept piling up. And on September 11, 2012, I was there when all of it came crashing down. This isn’t about reopening some old political argument. It’s about telling the story in the order it actually happened and remembering the 4 Americans who never came home because of OUR failed government and policies. Our society needs a serious overhaul.

I grew up with some pretty amazing male role models. My grandpa coming from the Greatest Generation. My incredible uncles that served during Vietnam and loved me fiercely. My dad dedicated his life to protecting and serving the community. My big brother who I’ve seen lose years of his life and now more gray hairs than we can count doing the same thing as our dad. I want my son to be a man who will stand his ground, protect the vulnerable, and treat ordinary life as morally serious. Outside of my family, I was surrounded by more amazing men. But as I look back, I think about all the other men that shaped my life and compare it to whom young men today have to look up to. William Wallace, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, John Wayne, countless characters. We need men that are courageous, honest, loyal, and have a willingness to suffer for a people or a principle; Atticus Finch does the same in a quieter key, defending a man the crowd wants condemned. Steve Irwin and Luke Nichols of Outdoor Boys turn that same energy toward wonder, family, and the living world. Mr. Rogers embodies all of these in his own way. The list goes on and on. But they all have something in common… Jesus Christ! He pushes it further into patient kindness, dignity for children, outcasts, you, me, and love that does not need an audience. The resemblance is not that they were all saints or the same kind of man; it is that each, in story or in fact, is remembered as choosing duty, family, truth-telling, or mercy over cynicism and ease.

What radicalized me? It didn’t happen overnight. Watching Americans having to choose whether to burn alive or jump to their deaths. Repeat criminals causing chaos, pain, and death to law-abiding citizens who were too scared to defend themselves. A government taking away your ability to board a plane, take a bus, buy food, go to work, or provide for your family: forcing you to take an experimental drug that caused myocarditis, pericarditis, miscarriages, blood clots, and Guillain-Barré syndrome (The list continues to grow). Arresting paddleboarders, surfers, and skateboarders while pardoning the architect who knew the origin and risks of it all. The creation of a surveillance state. Enabling an invasion of illegal immigrants. Protecting civil unrest and rioters while arresting the innocent who were trying to protect the helpless. The death of freedom of speech.

There simply is something special about your first team. I still remember walking into that team room for the first time. Brand new Green Beret. Beret still stiff. Tab still bright. Heart hammering so hard I was convinced the whole detachment could hear it. There they were. Team Leader, former enlisted Green Beret who had already lived the life, then went through OCS and came back as an officer. Quiet confidence. Eyes that had already seen more than most men ever would. Team Sergeant, straight out of a special missions unit. One of the most frightening, most talented practitioners of controlled violence ever to walk this planet. The kind of man who didn’t need to raise his voice. The room just got quieter when he entered. 18F, Ranger Regiment blood. Sharp as a razor and twice as hard. Already operating on a different level. Senior 18 (x2), both E7s that had been in Group for a decade. And then there was me. The FNG. Fresh out of the Q Course. Standing in the middle of all that quiet lethality, trying not to look like I was about to throw up. Every part of me screaming the same thought on loop: (I do not belong here) These weren’t just “studs.” These were the kind of men you read about in the quiet hours, the ones who made the impossible look routine. And somehow the Army had decided to put me on their team. I felt like a kid who had wandered into the wrong room and was about to get politely (or not so politely) asked to leave. But they didn’t ask me to leave. They just looked at me the way operators look at the new guy, measuring, weighing, deciding how much rope to give him. I was terrified. Not of dying. Not of the mission. Of disappointing them. Looking back now, that nervous, underserving feeling never fully left. It just changed shape. It became the fuel that made you train harder, study longer, listen more carefully. It was the price of admission into a brotherhood that doesn’t hand out participation trophies. That first day on the ODA, standing there as the youngest, greenest, most out-of-place man in the room… I didn’t feel ready. I just knew I would rather die trying to become worthy of those men then any other option. …. And I still feel that way.

The media narrative trying to turn these Sailors and Marines into victims because this deployment was hard is exactly the problem. Service is hard. Combat is hard. Go tell the World War II generation that service was supposed to be comfortable. We all missed our families. We all wanted to come home. But our commitment to this country and the American people was never conditional on our individual wants or needs, our comfort, or whether we agreed with the mission. The oath we took was unconditional. That’s why it’s called service and sacrifice. The mission comes first. The standards come first. Wearing the uniform is a privilege, and not everyone gets to do it. If you put that uniform on, you’re making a commitment to give this country everything it asks of you and to carry out the lawful orders of the President and your chain of command. If you’re not willing to do that, then get out. Thankful we have leaders again who are willing to say this out loud, hold the standard, and get our military dialed back in on what it exists to do: fight and win our nation’s wars.

As we have seen throughout history, governments begin to abuse great tools. And these tools without a doubt could be used for good. I was just corresponding with a police officer.
