Little clarification here: The NFL's special teams committee is not trying to eradicate the use of a holder on kickoffs. That is allowed under the dynamic kickoff rules but has normally only been used in windy/inclement conditions. The focus of today's meeting will be about making sure teams always use a tee on kickoffs, no matter if they're also using a holder or having a kicker kick the ball from the tee. Not using a tee with someone holding the ball can alter the angle of the ball on kickoffs.
Richard Hightower said that special teams coaches who were on the committee to create the new kickoff rules will meet Friday to discuss the rules going forward after the Eagles (in Week 2) and Falcons (in Week 1) used punter Braden Mann to hold the ball during kickoffs. Under the new kickoff rules, the ball is supposed to be placed on a tee.
Using a holder was not the intent of the rule, Hightower said, which is why the meeting was called in the first place. He stressed that it will get "corrected."
