My Second Rodeo. October 9. This is a story about a man who told everybody he was looking for something that didn't exist. "But I guess seeking is fun," he said. Last September, Todd Snider went back to the Purple Building on 11th Street in East Nashville with an idea he could not shut up about. He called it the sound of country music 10 years from now. Country music pulled apart and put back together slow and swampy, with New Orleans horns on it. He believed in it so hard he was planning a double album. And he cut it the old way. The stubborn way. Voice and guitar first, alone in the room. No click track. No band. The band came in later and had one instruction: follow him. Wherever the song swerved, whatever he did to the time — follow him. October 1, in an email to his producer: "i honestly think we're doing something important that is going to affect this town for a long time." October 9: "ive never been more excited about art i was working on." A little over a month later he was gone. But here's the thing about a man who insists on being recorded first. He was still there. On every song — his voice, his guitar, out front, leading. He'd left emails, voice memos, demos. A whole map. So his band went back into the Purple Building and did the only thing Todd ever asked of them. They followed him. The song where he found the sound is called "Solid Country Gold," and it's out today. Greetings from Aimless Television HQ. We may have let the morning get away from us. Today we’re releasing a new Todd Snider song, premiering a film, turning on a television station, announcing a free block party and naming a street after your favorite Folk Hero. Other than that, not a lot going on. The stretch of 11th Street outside the Purple Building will become Todd Snider Way on October 11, the day Todd would have turned 60. We’ll be out there that weekend for a free block party with Chicago Farmer, the Eastside Bulldogs and a whole lot of Todd’s favorite people. Today, “Freewheelin’ (Every Day at a Time)” goes out into the world. At high noon Central, its new film will premiere on Aimless Television. That’s Todd’s television station, inside Jon Griffin’s tree. The film plays first. Then the television keeps going through performances, stories, films, music videos and whatever else Aimless decides belongs on television that day. You do not pick the next video. Aimless does. Greetings from Aimless, Inc. HQ. We have been building a room inside Jon Griffin’s tree, just through the little purple door on Todd’s website. There is a television in there. For over a decade, Todd wanted his own TV station, and he kept after us about how to make it happen. He spent years asking people to keep the cameras rolling and left behind enough footage to keep a station running for a very long time. Whole films and performances, music videos, and the misadventures of what he called “a flamboyantly fucked-up person,” told with perfect rhyme and timing. Todd was already calling his broadcasts Aimless Television. We’re keeping the name until somebody comes up with a worse one. We think that television belongs inside Todd’s world. It is not YouTube. It is not another app. It is a television inside a tree. Every visit will begin with the new “Freewheelin’ (Every Day at a Time)” film. The song begins with a man leaving home bound for glory and fighting his way “from just another likely story to a cautionary tale.” He climbs, crashes and sets out looking again. In August 2025, Todd said the thing he was seeking didn’t exist. “But I guess seeking is fun.” For the film, we’re going seeking with him. When it ends, the television will keep going. The channel can head off in different directions, running for hours and hours and hours. You do not pick the next video.
