Right now, crypto is let’s be honest, not in the best shape. The Web3 market is going through a rough phase: no long-awaited bull run, global events aren’t helping, projects are dropping one by one. Some are dead, some are barely alive, others are just quietly trying to survive. BUT there’s one thing people don’t talk about enough: This is exactly the time you need to be MAXIMUM cautious. Why? Because in a bear market, scammers don’t disappear, they get more aggressive and smarter. Two simple reasons: 1. Fewer projects - higher chance scammers reach you. Just math. Less signal, more noise. 2. Scams thrive when the market is down. That’s basically an axiom. Less money + more pressure = easier to manipulate people. Where’s the main scam activity right now? VCs and funds. If you look at the market, VC activity has dropped hard. They invest less, move осторожно, and many are deep underwater. And on top of that a ton of fake funds and clones are popping up. How it usually plays out. You meet a middleman. He says: “I’ve got a list of funds, I can introduce you. 3–10% success fee, no upfront payment”. Sounds like a dream, right? That sweet cherry on top. Ah, and the funny part, most middlemen are actually NOT scammers. You agree. You get introduced to “funds”. And that’s where the show begins. Scenario #1 - low effort, still works They invite you to a call. Zoom / Google Meet, fund name looks legit, but the email is just Gmail. On the call: - questions seem okay - sometimes even sound like real investors - but details give it away: robotic voice, weird accent, inconsistencies I had a case: guy supposedly from Singapore, legit fund name - but the accent was clearly Russian 🙂 Then classic move: a couple of days later - you get a password-protected Google Doc. You open it = your data is gone. And yeah, everyone thinks: “I’m not stupid, I won’t open that”. You will. If not your, someone on your team will. Scenario #2 - more advanced A more polished version. A “fund representative” reaches out (often from Web2). Profile is new, but overall looks decent. You jump on a call: - camera on - conversation feels professional - everything seems normal But if you look closer: - slight delay between video and audio - something feels… off (Spoiler: could be a generated persona) Then the conversation slowly shifts: -how much crypto you hold -where it’s stored -centralized or decentralized -“let’s meet in person, fly to our office” And here’s the key moment. When questions get too personal, you either freeze or answer casually. By the way, casual is better: - if it’s a scam - you lose nothing - if it’s real - you stay natural And then comes pressure. As soon as you: -avoid personal questions -refuse to travel -stop playing along they flip ;))) You get: - pressure accusations - “you’re not competent” -sometimes straight insults Conversation ends fast. The 2026 scam playbook. It’s almost always the same pattern: 1) Hook you with money 2) Apply pressure 3) Make you “prove competence” 4) Push you into an action That action can be: - sending money - sharing documents - traveling - giving access Plus classic tricks: - “we invest on behalf of clients” - authority play - “you didn’t perform” - flipping the narrative The only thing that matters. If it feels like a scam - it probably is. Don’t try to prove yourself, argue, “win” the conversation. Just drop it and move on. You didn’t lose anything. You didn’t mess up. You did it right. In this market, it’s not the smartest who survive - it’s the most aware. And one more thing, keep your team informed. Most breaches don’t happen through you, but through someone next to you. Since some of the names involve fairly large companies, I won’t publicly list them to avoid accidentally harming reputations. I decided to study a very interesting and well-constructed scam scheme, made quite professionally, and honestly, anyone could fall for it. I want to share this information with you, maybe it will help someone and save them from losing their data or money. How it all begins It all starts when someone messages you on X (Twitter), offering to participate in a podcast, a rather fresh show called Coindesk Podcast @CoinDeskPodcast Sounds tempting, of course a bit suspicious, but because of my huge curiosity I decided to see what would happen next. I checked the account in advance. There were a few red flags right away, like an excessive amount of retweets from Coindesk. But overall, the account of the person who wrote to me looked professionally made, with a strong number of followers, good organic activity, and even a social score of 271. On top of that, there were many mutual followers, including people I personally know. Still, I decided to go all the way and see what would happen next. The attention hook 1) The setup You agree that the podcast will include other guests, people from strong companies, and with topics you are good at. 2) The group chat They offer to add you to a chat group. I wouldn’t join through a link, so I gave them my Telegram, which was added to a group called "CoinDesk Podcast #187" 3) Building trust There were already people in the group, and there was an active chat between the host, two other participants, and the person who invited me. Everyone wrote properly, each had their own speaking style with a bit of slang, it all felt very natural. The group discussed the podcast itself, asked standard questions (they even asked to send info to an email “for verification”). I’ve been in real groups like this before, and everything looked exactly the same. 4) Creating normalcy Then they shared a schedule with possible podcast times. Everyone chose a convenient time. If you picked your slot, someone would say they couldn’t make it and suggest another date. It felt casual, with no pressure or pushiness, just a discussion. I picked a date about six days later. 5) The waiting and the “X day” Nobody bothered me for six days, nobody wrote anything. They just waited for the right day. And when that day came, they sent a website. To be fair, it was really well made. I take my hat off to these nasty scammers, their design was on point. Still, when I checked it with a website analyzer, it showed that the site was created very recently. I always check that and advise everyone to do the same. On that site, you’re supposed to download an app where the actual call would happen. I think you can already guess what happens next. Once you download it, your data is gone. Everything on your device is theirs. 6) The reveal As soon as I said in the group that I don’t download anything on my devices and that I’m only ready to join through trusted platforms like Google Meet, the group was deleted and I was banned. Curtain down 😄 That’s how I “lost my chance” to join the Coindesk podcast, hahaha ⚔️ Why I’m writing this Because there are tons of scams out there. But this one really makes you lower your guard. If you or your friends have ever joined similar podcasts, are active in alpha groups, or often talk to people in the Web3 industry, trust me, this scheme looks absolutely identical to a real invitation. Completely identical. Especially if you’ve done this many times before. I’d even say it’s designed for those who are usually careful but somewhat media-savvy. My personal recommendations - Always doubt everything. Don’t show it, but double-check everything. It’s crucial for your safety. - Never download anything new onto your devices without checking it first. - Any kind of pressure on you is unacceptable. Nobody owes anyone anything. Only you decide what to do. Don’t fall for manipulation and don’t let anyone push you. - Don’t act on emotions. Sit down, think it over calmly, with a cup of tea or a beer, whatever you prefer.
