I was pleased to see my comments of appreciation for Lord Patrick Vallance picked up by the Times. He will be missed as science minister and it’s right to praise his achievements, especially in starting the turn around in life sciences that is so needed. Looking forward, I’m very encouraged that such experienced and respected Secretaries of State have been appointed with Yvette Cooper and Jonathan Reynolds at health and business respectively. It is vital that those two departments work hand in glove, especially now that DSIT has been folded into what was DBT. The most important thing government can get right for our sector is the link between Science, Health and Economic Growth. We have an opportunity in the UK to significantly improve how we prevent and treat disease. But we can go further and support patients and safeguard the NHS whilst also having a positive impact on the economy if we work smartly. What does this mean in practice? We already have the Office for Life Sciences which does a great job, working on the boundaries between Health, Science and Business departments. As the Prime Minister finalises his new government team I think he should consider a joint ministerial role that works to both departments, hard wiring that connection between science health and growth that we need. Whatever happens I and the team at The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) look forward to working with the new government on our shared agenda. lnkd.in/eDmcS68y

Patrick Vallance has been a tremendous Science Minister and a genuine champion for the UK's life sciences sector. He has been instrumental in beginning to turn around international sentiment towards the UK as a life sciences destination. On behalf of the industry, I want to thank him for his leadership and his willingness to engage directly and constructively with me and with our sector throughout his time in office. He leaves big shoes to fill. EXCL: Dr Zubir Ahmed has been in talks with Andy Burnham’s team about the possibility of taking up the role of Health Secretary. Ahmed resigned as a minister in May with the intention of backing Wes Streeting for the leadership. While the move clearly backfired at first, he could now end up being rewarded with an even bigger prize for standing down. The Spectator understands that the surgeon has met Burnham’s inner circle and presented them with endorsements from the upper echelons of the NHS for him to become the first doctor to serve as Health Secretary.
