George Russell had the highest average apex speed in Qualifying at Baku, 98.8 kph. Hamilton 98.2, Verstappen 98.1.

Lewis Hamilton puts a tough Quali down to bad planning -- "As we went into Q3 they changed the plan. Instead of doing two runs, we ended up waiting, and because I was ahead of Charles, I had nobody ahead of me for the tow. So that was worth quite a chunk in itself But either way, we couldn't compete with the Mercedes. They are just outright so much quicker on the straights than us. Asked about fighting back to the podium: "I think it's going to be hard to overtake the Mercedes tomorrow and keeping up with the Mercedes engine on the straights will be tough, but I'll give it everything I've got."

Max Verstappen says an engine issue cost him half a second in Qualifying -- "Then in Q3, in my middle lap, just trying to start the lap, the battery didn't charge. So you start a lap with half a battery, so you have to abort, then you lose temperature because you don't have enough power, basically. And that then snowballs into the final lap."
