On October 6, LiveWorkPlay was recognized as the #2 Best Place to Work in Ottawa before an audience of 400 business and organizational leaders at Best Places to Work & @DisruptHROttawa 2026. Thank you to the @obj_news and the many partners and sponsors who made the evening possible. The combination of Best Places to Work and DisruptHR made for a particularly fitting evening. Speakers challenged conventional thinking about trust, belonging, performance, hiring, workplace rules, and leadership. Those themes connected directly with changes LiveWorkPlay began making about a decade ago. Our Board of Directors authorized significant investments in people and workplace culture. Our Co-Leaders Julie Kingstone and Keenan Wellar collaborated with the staff team and translated those commitments into organizational systems and practices. Directors and Team Leads brought them into day-to-day operations. Staff throughout LiveWorkPlay have continued to use them, question them, improve them, and identify where we can do better. One of the most relevant DisruptHR presentations came from Sanita Alias, who challenged workplace rules built around control rather than trust. Her message strongly reflected our own experience of moving away from conventional top-down supervision toward collaborative performance management and coaching. The Best Places to Work recognition is based on an independent two-part assessment combining an extensive review of workplace policies and practices with an anonymous employee engagement survey. LiveWorkPlay averaged 98% overall, with every category at 93% or higher. We are also especially proud that LiveWorkPlay is the first charity providing direct services to people in the community to be recognized as one of Ottawa’s Best Places to Work. For community-based social services, sustained investment in compensation, benefits, professional development, workplace culture, and new approaches to leadership can be challenging. We hope this recognition demonstrates that innovation in how people are supported at work can and should be part of our sector too. One of the strategic directions that helped launch this work was called *Building A Leaderful Organization." Looking at the LiveWorkPlay team gathered at Algonquin College last night, that phrase felt particularly appropriate. Congratulations on number 2 in Ottawa! For a team whose whole mission is helping people belong at work, it must feel extra meaningful to be recognized for how your own staff feel too. What do you think your team values most about working there?

Congrats to Tyler! Being the first to jump in and learn something new is such a great quality to recognize, and it's even better seeing it lead right into a Shipping Supervisor role. Now I'm curious, what's his favorite airplane story?

It's Customer Service Appreciation Week, and we’re especially grateful for the people at Citizens who show up every day ready to help our neighbors. Our Customer Service team is there to listen, answer questions, solve problems, and help our neighbors. They bring patience, compassion, and care to thousands of interactions with our customers, often helping people through stressful or unexpected situations. It’s work that takes empathy, knowledge, and a genuine commitment to serving others. To our Customer Service team, thank you for the care you bring to Citizens and the customers we serve. We appreciate you! Show them some love in the comments! 💙 💚

Love the shoutout to patience on those stressful calls, because staying calm for someone on their worst day is a real skill. Teams like that do better when they hear thanks out loud, just like this. What's a favorite moment your team has had helping a neighbor?

Big work anniversaries deserve exactly this kind of moment, especially with leadership showing up in person to say thanks. Years of steady work keeping a city running can go unnoticed, so it's great to see it celebrated. What milestone year got the biggest cheer?

Every shift, the staff at @GEHNHSnews show up for others. This week, others showed up for them. Around 1,600 hot meals served during staff appreciation week - a small gesture of gratitude for teams who give so much every day. #rrtcares #RapidReliefTeam

Love the line that this week others showed up for them, because staff who care for everyone else rarely get a hot meal handed to them in the middle of a shift. 1,600 meals is a lot of people feeling seen. What did the staff say made it special?

Love that Christian is recognized for always being ready to support her coworkers, because that kind of dependable help is what makes a busy clinic feel like a team. Shoutouts like this make it visible. How does your team nominate each month's pick?

12 years ago, when I was at @RegionsBank 🏦 in Birmingham, AL, we celebrated Employee Appreciation Day. I led this team to win our first-ever flag football 🏈 trophy! 🏆 The team didn’t have a coach, so I volunteered to coach. I had experience coaching #rugby and refereeing, so I put those skills to work. My philosophy is simple: self-belief, confidence, teamwork, and discipline. Thank you 🙏🏽 , Regions teammates, for the great memories! Cheers! 🥂

Stepping up to coach when nobody else would is a great story, and it's funny how a flag football win can stick with a team for twelve years. Shared wins like that build trust that carries right back into the office. Do you still keep in touch with that crew?

Five years in Floral is such a sweet milestone to celebrate out loud, and calling Dana out by name makes it feel personal instead of routine. Those anniversary shoutouts really do help newer folks see what sticking around looks like. What's Dana's favorite arrangement to make?

Our Pennsylvania office sends an Eastern Time Zone Breakfast Message for Employee Appreciation Week. Cheers to our team there. We know you are wildly busy and appreciate the outstanding work. #OlerRelo #ResidentialMoving

"We dough-nut know what we'd do without you" is such a fun note, and timing it for the Pennsylvania team's morning makes it feel personal. Small rituals like that go a long way when a team is spread across time zones. Is each office getting its own treat this week?

Behind every student’s success is a team of dedicated employees. 💙🧡 Employee Appreciation Night brought LCS staff and families together for food, music, games and fellowship. Thank you to everyone who helped make the celebration possible! #OneLCS

Food, music, and games with families in the room is such a lovely way to say thanks, because staff get to see who their work is really for. Nights like that tend to spark the hallway stories people keep retelling all year. What was the crowd favorite of the evening?
3
Recognition and open communication on the same list makes so much sense, since people speak up more when they know their effort actually gets noticed. It usually starts with leaders modeling those small thank yous every week. Which of those four do you see teams skip first?

Love seeing the quiet professionals get the spotlight, because they're often the ones holding everything together without asking for credit. Recognition like this tells the whole team that steady reliability matters just as much as the big wins. How did his coworkers react?

Midweek kudos might be the most underrated team ritual. A quick shoutout in Slack or Teams for whoever untangled a messy handoff or answered the same question three times with a smile lands so much better than saving it all for Friday. Who on your team deserves one today?

Protecting focus with a short async update is such a clean upgrade from another round of silent squares. Curious which format your teams stick with longest once they make the switch?

Congratulations to Ms. Tishani! A monthly spotlight like this is such a simple ritual, and it does a lot to make people feel seen by the whole team. Do colleagues get to nominate each other, or does leadership pick?

Love that Maria's recognition is tied to real client feedback, because praise lands so much harder when it names the specific thing someone did. Calling it a PK Champion gives it a nice sense of ritual too. How does the team celebrate a new champion?

Nothing kills team spirit faster than mandatory fun

Mandatory fun really does flatten the room fast. The teams that keep spirit seem to treat connection as optional and short, more like five minutes in the channel than another blocked hour. What has actually worked for your teams when they drop the forced version?

I got a message this morning that my Monday team meeting was canceled next week because both of my coworkers were going to be off. So I thought about how long my weekend was about to be and decided to take the day off too. Only thing is that we have to explain our reason for requesting our time. I didn't have a real reason, so I just put, "One is the loneliest number." My director approved it and replied that it literally made her laugh out loud. I'll be here all night.

"One is the loneliest number" is an elite time-off reason, and a director who laughs out loud and approves it sounds like a keeper.
