From high-level Member States representatives to reps of regional organisations, civil society, faith-based actors, both public & closed door conversations over #UNGA81HLW placed focus on current critical situations of concern for atrocity prevention and early warning action.

I was deeply honored to recieve Mr. Chaloka Beyani, @UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and Hate Speech at our @UN_Women offices today. We shared on how hate speech is structural violence against women and can be online and offline. We briefed on the range of collaborative work, and how the mandate intersects with our UN commitment to human rights, peace and security and the responsibility to protect. I am honoured to sit as a member of the UN high level steering committee that supports this work, bringing a gender equality and women’s human rights perspective to this mandate.

A particularly important and personal meeting amid recent developments with UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Dr. Chaloka Beyani. 🇧🇦 FM @dinokonakovic revisited the concerns raised with UN Member States regarding the state and military honors accorded in Serbia to Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srebrenica is not simply a chapter of history. Behind every judgment are victims, survivors and families who have carried the consequences for more than three decades. Glorifying those responsible is an affront to their dignity and a warning of what happens when denial and revisionism are normalized. Minister Konaković called for a clear international response and stressed the responsibility to defend established facts, protect the dignity of victims and recognize warning signs before they become something far more dangerous. The lesson of Srebrenica is not only to remember what happened, but to act when we recognize the warning signs again.

Prevention starts with education, confronting the past and preserving the truth, so that the gravest crimes are never repeated. At #UNGA81, DPM & FM @ErvinIbrahimov1 met with UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Chaloka Beyani. They discussed Montenegro’s continued support for the UN’s prevention agenda, as well as the importance of combating hate speech and strengthening the culture of remembrance.
