The closure can be fully closed to provide additional riverine flood protection to downtown D.C. 🌧️ It's operated & maintained by the National Park Service and was designed & built by the Baltimore District, who inspects it upon completion of the exercise.

SM-1 began operations in 1957. In addition to supporting Fort Belvoir, the facility helped establish pioneering operating data that informed nuclear power development, and its completed decommissioning helps the Army understand the full lifecycle of nuclear power.
