UTEP men’s basketball coach Joe Golding discusses newcomer Youssouf Traoré after the 6-foot-10 forward from Bamako, Mali, signed with the Miners this week. Traoré arrives in El Paso after three seasons in Spain, most recently with Casademont Zaragoza in Liga Endesa. He also played for Mali’s U18 and U19 national teams. In 2024 he was named MVP of the FIBA U18 AfroBasket after averaging 12.8 points and 16.2 rebounds as Mali won the title. He recorded a double-double in all six tournament games, including 15 points and 14 rebounds in the championship victory over Cameroon. At the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland, Traoré led Mali in scoring (17.1 points), rebounding (9.3) and assists (2.6) while shooting 57.5 percent from the field. He posted four double-doubles in seven games and had a tournament-high 27 points and 12 rebounds against Argentina. Earlier, he averaged a double-double with FC Barcelona’s U18 team. Golding said Traoré was added late in the recruiting cycle because of his size, length and athleticism, traits the staff believes can translate to UTEP’s first season in the Mountain West. The Miners open the 2026-27 season in November.
