Don’t Let Hunger Win
Gaza Deserves to Eat
Sawsan Al-Masri, 27, is a widowed mother from Gaza raising her three-year-old son Khalil after her husband was martyred in May 2024. Their home was destroyed during the genocide, and they now live in a tent beside her parents’ tent, paying $100 a month in rent that she cannot afford. Khalil has chronic health problems, including difficulty breathing, vitiligo, persistent stomach bloating, and malnutrition, and his mother is struggling to find him proper medical care and enough nutritious food. Sawsan was also injured in her left eye during the siege, and the injury continues to cause problems, especially with cooking over fire and exposure to sunlight, so she needs special eye drops that cost at least $50. They have been displaced around 10 times, not including moves within the same encampment, and the nearest soup kitchen is far away with no guarantee that food will be available, while even the water distribution point requires a long walk. Sawsan also needs to repair their tent and bathroom before the winter, with the repairs expected to cost around $200. As the only parent caring for Khalil, she is trying to manage his health needs, food, rent, and basic living conditions while also dealing with her own eye injury.
