VCFD Fighters honored at IAFF Fallen Firefighters Memorial This past Saturday, Engineer Tommy Minadeo and Fire Captain Jeff Mauer were honored at the annual International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs. Engineer Minadeo and Captain Mauer’s names were added to the memorial wall, honoring firefighters from across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Family members of Engineer Minadeo and Captain Mauer were accompanied by Fire Chief Dustin Gardner and other Chief Officers, leadership of the Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association, and the VCFD Honor Guard, who also participated in this annual ceremony. Firefighters Rescue Kitten Trapped in an Entertainment Center 🚒
 Ventura County Fire Department responded to a report of an animal in distress and discovered a kitten trapped inside an entertainment center.
 Suki had only been with her new family a few weeks when she crawled partway into an opening in the cabinet and couldn’t back out.
 Firefighters from Engine 50 in Camarillo removed the A/V equipment from the cabinet, gently lowered it into a more workable position, and carefully freed her. Suki showed no signs of injury and was returned to her relieved family.
 Her owner tells us this same video of the rescue was posted to TikTok this week, drawing more than 7 million views.

The Sandy Fire struck the community of Simi Valley beginning on May 18th. Ultimately, the fire burned 2,183 acres destroying one home and causing over 43,000 evacuations. The Ventura County Fire Department along with over 1,000 firefighters from across California responded to this incident - protecting our community through aggressive firefighting, a coordinate rapid response from regional partners, integrated technology solutions, and community wildfire preparedness. @disasterproof and @repwhitesides produced a short documentary describing how this combination of regional partnerships, strong community support, strict defensible space guidelines, and integrated technology solutions were pivotal in fighting The Sandy Fire and how Ventura County Fire Department and the residents of Simi Valley are a model for what’s possible when preparation and rapid response come together. Today has been designated a permitted agricultural burn day by the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD). Agricultural burning is used to dispose of plant waste from farming operations and is allowed only in agricultural areas with a valid burn permit.   The Fire Department is aware of these permitted burns and is monitoring conditions. Today, Santa Claus and his trusty helpers made a vertical entrance at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC), rappelling down the side of the hospital to visit the pediatric unit. Joined by Ventura County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams, Santa brought smiles, cheer, and special gifts to some of the smallest — and most courageous — patients in the hospital. Firefighters from Oxnard Fire, Ventura City Fire, and Ventura County Fire all came together to help Santa safely deliver presents and holiday joy to children and families spending the season in the hospital. For a few moments the challenges of the day were replaced with laughter, wonder, and a little holiday magic. VCFD firefighters rescue dog trapped under a shipping container in Ojai. At approximately 7:45pm, VCFD dispatchers received a call for an animal in distress after a dog (Finn) had crawled under a shipping container. Firefighters from Engine 22 and Medic Rescue Engine 23 were dispatched and used specialty rescue tools, including holmatro heavy lifting bags, to extricate the trapped dog. Thankfully, Finn was unharmed and firefighters were able to safely get him back to his owners. VCFD Firefighter / Paramedic Edward Campana was recognized with the 40 under 40 award by the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce yesterday. FF/PM Campana is the program manager of VCFD’s whole blood transfusion program, and was the driving force in bringing this life-saving treatment to Ventura County. VCFD’s firefighters administered the first field blood transfusion by Paramedics in California just a few days after the program began. Since then, a total of 15 transfusions have been administered - all of which resulted in significant improvements in patient’s condition. “This award is a huge honor, both for me and for our department”, said Campana. “I am grateful for the support from our Medical Director, Fire Chief and Executive Staff, EMS Division, Ventura County EMS Agency and all of our partners that made this program a success.” Thank you Firefighter / Paramedic Campana for your commitment to innovation in meeting our community’s public safety needs. VCFD placed a new rescue ambulance into service today at Fire Station 42 in Moorpark, enhancing the city’s emergency medical response and adding capacity during high-demand incidents. The new unit, designated Rescue Ambulance 42 (RA42), increases the number of medical transport resources available in the region and brings two additional firefighter-paramedics to the city each day. These added personnel will help deliver faster, more flexible service to residents during life-threatening emergencies. RA42 is fully equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including whole blood for emergency transfusions, the LUCAS mechanical CPR device, and advanced Stryker gurneys—tools that support paramedics in delivering critical, pre-hospital care in the field. “Every second counts during a medical emergency,” said Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner. “This new rescue ambulance in Moorpark gives our firefighter-paramedics another tool to quickly begin advanced care and transport patients to the hospital without delay—especially during times of high system demand.” @CountyVentura @CityofMoorpark

VCFD celebrated the opening of new Fire Station 34 in Thousand Oaks with a ribbon cutting ceremony today. New Station 34 features two pull-through engine bays, seven dorms, office and conference room facilities, and more than triples the size of the previous station. Construction in the 1.9 acre facility began in April, 2022, and Medic Engine 34 began operating from the station on March 15th of this year. VCFD’s landmark blood transfusion program was featured by KCAL 9 News on Wednesday. VCFD has now performed two pre-hospital transfusions for patients with traumatic injuries since the program started just weeks ago. The most recent was for a stabbing victim in the Fillmore area. In both cases, the transfusion was started within minutes of our Firefighter Paramedics arriving on scene and led to significant improvements in patient conditions and outcomes. VCFD and the Ventura County Board of Supervisors recently recognized a dedicated group of retired firefighters, known as “The Sifters,” for their compassionate support following the Mountain Fire. Within hours of the incident, this group of former VCFD firefighters mobilized to assist fire victims—literally sifting through the ashes to help families recover cherished belongings. The team built sifting trays, wore personal protective equipment, and drove through affected neighborhoods, offering both practical assistance and heartfelt support. Their efforts helped numerous families recover meaningful possessions, including heirlooms and personal mementos; providing comfort during an incredibly difficult time. Supervisor Jeff Gorell joined Fire Chief Dustin Gardner to express their gratitude on behalf of the entire Ventura County community. VCFD invites department members and the community to a bunting ceremony Wed 3/12, 10:30am at VCFD Station 45, honoring the sacrifice of Engineer Tommy Minadeo. Black and purple bunting, symbolic of mourning and respect, will be draped across the firehouse, signifying the department’s collective grief and solidarity. During the ceremony, the Ventura County Fire Department Honor Guard will conduct a formal tribute, including the ceremonial placement of a wreath and a framed photo of Engineer Minadeo at the base of the station's flagpole. A flag ceremony will follow, reinforcing the deep respect and gratitude for his service.

With deep sorrow, the Ventura County Fire Department announces the line of duty death of Engineer Thomas “Tommy” James Daniel Minadeo at the age of 32. Engineer Minadeo dedicated his life to serving and protecting the community with unwavering commitment, professionalism, and heart. His bravery, dedication, and kindness left an indelible mark on those he worked alongside and the countless lives he touched. Minadeo joined the Ventura County Fire Department as a fire control worker in 2015. In 2017, he was hired as a firefighter, graduating from Academy 54. He was assigned to Truck 54 in Camarillo, Station 26 in Santa Paula, Station 31 in Thousand Oaks, Station 51 in El Rio, Station 55 in Camarillo and Station 53 in Port Hueneme. Tommy promoted to engineer in 2022 and served his final assignment at Station 45 in Simi Valley. Minadeo was diagnosed with job-related cancer last October and had been undergoing treatment. “Tommy was part of our fire family for nearly 10 years, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us in response to our community’s public safety needs,” Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said. “We now stand with Tommy’s family in grieving his passing and supporting each other.”

At 4:56 AM, OCFA firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 29400 block of Pointe Royale in Laguna Niguel. While performing a search for residents, Kevin reported feeling unwell and was escorted outside to a waiting paramedic unit. Shortly after, he collapsed. Despite the heroic efforts of our crews and medical personnel, Kevin did not survive. Kevin served the Orange County Fire Authority with distinction for over 25 years, joining our family in July of 1999, after serving honorably in the United States Navy. He was known for his warm personality and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. Kevin is survived by his wife and four children. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply grateful for Kevin’s dedication to protecting our community and will never forget his sacrifice. Please keep Kevin’s loved ones and our OCFA family in your thoughts.

The Mountain Fire remains at 19,904 acres and is 93% contained with 140 personnel assigned to the incident. Today, crews continued working on backhaul, suppression repair and mop-up operations, while also supporting repopulation efforts within the affected communities. This morning, the Ventura County Fire, CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo Unit and the Ventura County Sheriff’s office took unified command of the incident, with the departure of CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 5. We want to extend our gratitude to CAL FIRE Team 5 for their tremendous support of our community and our agencies. A Local Assistance Center (LAC) continues to support affected residents with a wide range services. The LAC is located at the Ventura County Office of Education, 5100 Adolfo Rd in Camarillo, and will be open from 9am to 7pm. The Mountain Fire Incident Management Team will be hosting a community meeting at 6pm Sunday, November 10th, 2024 at Ventura County Fire Station 54, 2160 Pickwick Drive, Camarillo. The team will provide incident updates and information for members of the public.

VCFD, CAL FIRE and our cooperators strongly discourage anyone from flying a UAS (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems) in or near a wildland fire. Flying a drone near a wildfire can be extremely dangerous for pilots and aircraft in the immediate area. Valuable firefighting aircraft can be grounded due to these actions, impeding the chance to quickly extinguish a fire

The County of Ventura will be under a Red Flag warning starting Wednesday morning and currently predicted to last until Thursday evening. We encourage all Ventura County residents to register for emergency alerts at VCAlert.org. Early this morning, a vegation fire broke out on the SB shoulder of the 101, between Carmen and Arneill Rds. in Camarillo. The fire was along the fence line between the 101 SB lanes and Ventura Blvd. #FFs deployed hose lines, and the fire was knocked down within minutes.

Congratulations to retired Fire Chief Bob Roper for his induction into the California Fire Chiefs Hall of Fame. Among his accomplishments, he was instrumental in upgrading & adding fire stations and construction of a new Fire Communications Center. @CalChiefs_CFCA @western_fire

VCFD wrapped up Fire Prevention Week supporting The American Red Cross with their Sound the Alarm campaign in Santa Paula. Fire Marshall Morelli and members of his Fire Prevention team helped with the installation of over 300 smoke alarms for residents of the city.
