I have a fun, rollicking, exclusive-filled book on black programs heading into production, so the Blackbird fever is encouraging. But NASA returning one to flight? Why? How? By whom? I could write pages on each.

Seems lilke @rookisaacman really does want to start an #SR71 #Blackbird flight-test program, almost seven decades after the original A-12 project started. I can think of only one reason why you'd do that, and the last time it was tried, a flight test engineer died.

Finally, to back up a few decades. The D-21 shows what a ramjet (even a simple one) can do once it gets to speed. It also shows how difficult it is to get there without a carrier aircraft. Rocket stages are a safety problem. NASA has spent a lot of money on high-speed turbine engines. The NASP project was all about an all-speed engine. A high-speed launch platform could be useful./7

And look who has a similar idea. At the Air Force Association the other day, startup Hermeus showed its Quarterhorse unmanned supersonic (M>2) aircraft carrying two mini-D-21s. Note that Hermeus' initial plan for M>3 involves water injection, which nobody has found leads to a closed design for sustained cruise. This would be an alternate path to M=4 cruise.

I still think Americans complain too much about gas prices and inflation - in part, because I was alive in the late 1970s.
But Trump *ran* on inflation and the cost of living, then started a war that raised the price of gas after vowing he wouldn't.

“Lincoln” was a curse word in my great-grandmother's house.
My father, born in 1953, has told me this many times. She spoke bitterly about what her own mother and father suffered "at the hands of those damned Yankees." Her parents lived through reconstruction and her grandparents lived through the Union occupation of Alexandria, Virginia, a city that tallied 2 total votes for Lincoln in 1860.
That is why the feeling survives in Southern families. It was never really about a dead president. It was a daughter's loyalty to her parents and grandparents, handed to a grandson who still remembers how she said the name.
My father never saw the war. He saw his grandmother's face when she spoke of the man who sent an army into her parents' town. He remembered her. He told me. The Civil War is distant history. Our father’s voices are not.
