She was 98 years old. Many of her family, including her 4-year-old daughter, were murdered during the liquidation of the Roma sector on 2 August 1944. At the age of more than 90, Zilli Schmidt began to talk at various events about the discrimination and persecution of Roma people in Nazi Germany, her experiences in concentration camps and her fight for compensation. She also wrote a book about her life entitled "God Had Plans for Me: To Keep Alive the Memory of the German Sinti." She was one of some 23,000 Roma and Sinti deported to Auschwitz.
