“Beautiful Regret” is the album’s slyest kiss-off: a folk-chamber ballad in which Buckley plays both the wound and the one who walked away. She sings as lover, dreamer, and spine of the story, then delivers the line that stings: “it must hurt to know I’m your beautiful regret.” She ends on a startling little cackle that The Guardian rightly called the sound of someone relishing a job well done.
The partnership began almost by accident. A mutual friend suggested they talk. Butler FaceTimed from his North London kitchen to Buckley’s mountain home in Kerry. They discovered a shared attachment to Killarney and Valentia Island, swapped notes on Nina Simone, Pentangle and Maurice O’Sullivan’s 20 Years A-Growing, and simply started writing. Buckley later said she was “sitting on a man’s floor who I’d never met,” terrified and trusting at once. Songs arrived fast. This one sits late in the record like a quiet settling of accounts after the more sweeping, orchestral pieces.
Critics heard a genuine collaboration rather than a celebrity side project. The 2022 album For All Our Days That Tear the Heart was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Reviewers praised Butler’s most elegant production since his Suede days and Buckley’s voice as puckish, weary, intimate and unmistakably her own. It is folk that borrows from Irish, English and Appalachian traditions without becoming costume. Four years on, the track still feels like the moment two people who barely knew each other found the exact temperature of regret and then smiled at it.
