Which Harry Potter character do you think readers misunderstood the most before the truth was revealed?

The Queen Toad herself Dolores Umbridge. Make no mistake I despise this woman, and consider her the most evil being in the Harry Potter universe, BUT she is terribly misunderstood. I don’t know of anyone who actually likes this woman, and if they do they need their head examined. However, I also don’t know anyone who understands her. With characters like James or Snape you have fans who like them, and fans that hate them, which allows us to see them from varying perspectives. With Dolores everyone hates her so when people bash her nobody challenges their opinion. We see her as the evil heartless woman who made children write with their own blood; carving into their flesh. She is racist against muggle borns and half breeds. She tried to use unforgivable curses on students. And of course her main sin is she directly opposed our heroes. Now let’s look at things from Dolores’ perspective. If this story was written about her she would be a tragic hero who does everything in her power to save the ministry, and Harry would be the Umbridge of her story. She was senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic. Meaning she would be very close to the Minister, and know almost everything he does. Lucius Malfoy was also very close to the Minister, which means Dolores spent years hearing from Lucius how incompetent Dumbledore was, and how terrible Harry was. Lucius was a well respected member of the wizarding world, with high credibility. On top of that evidence seemed to support his stories. Think of all that happened year 1 a teacher Dumbledore hired nearly kills a student and almost steals the philosopher stone. Year 2 the Chamber of Secrets was opened and several students almost died. Year 3 an escaped killer breaks into Hogwarts nearly killing several students, and a werewolf is hired as a teacher. Year 4 an archaic tournament is brought back that leads to a student’s death, and another escaped prisoner is hired as a teacher. All evidence from Dolores’ perspective points to Dumbledore being reckless and incompetent. And Harry being a rule breaking brat that gets away with whatever he wants just because his parents were killed. She arrives at Hogwarts with an already biased opinion, and then events that unfold seem to confirm her suspicions. All Umbridge wants is to restore order to the school she loves (everyone seems to love Hogwarts). She wants classes to be about learning in a structured controlled way, because she’s an anal person. And again in her defense the DADA teachers have been woefully incompetent in Harry’s time. She is addressing a legitimate problem. Her methods seem extreme by our standards, but you have to think of it from a 90s British boarding school standard, and factor in wizard physiology is different than that of muggles. Umbridge does get out of hand, but she starts of addressing a legit problem using acceptable methods, but the harder she struggles to fix things the harder the institution resist. So she tries to do more and more until the situation gets out of her control. Even when Voldemort took over the Ministry and Umbridge was persecuting muggle borns she was not doing it out of malice. She genuinely believed she was doing the right thing. She was trying to protect the Ministry and the wizarding world by any means necessary. Usually bad guys know they are bad guys. They know they are outlaws and criminals and they embrace it. Umbridge never perceived herself as a bad person. She perceived herself as a pillar of purity and strength trying to preserve the Might of the Ministry. Umbridge isn’t a bad person; She’s just a terrible person. But from her perspective she’s a martyr. And if we look at the narrative from her perspective she’s a tragic hero
