The Court has allowed the Department of Homeland Security use its revamped SAVE database to check voter-registration records against federal immigration and Social Security data. It was originally designed to verify the immigration status of individual noncitizens seeking government benefits. Now, DHS can use Social Security numbers, search records involving U.S.-born citizens and process large batches of records simultaneously. That means states can potentially identify noncitizens who are registered to vote. Instead of checking voters one by one, the federal government has opened the door to checking voter rolls at scale.
