In 2021, Americans under 30 were the most excited people in the country about AI. Pew just asked them again. 55% of them now say AI worries them more than it excites them. Five years ago it was 31%. The ones who feel more excited than worried dropped from 1 in 4 to about 1 in 10. Honestly, I wasn't surprised. I've been hearing this in person for months. I've sat with students who are convinced AI won't let them get a job. Not a good job. Any job. They say it the way you'd talk about the weather, like it's already decided. The professors I talked to see it from the other side. A few told me flat out they think students aren't as sharp as they were before AI, because now they just prompt a chatbot and paste whatever comes back. So when graduation season came around this year, the booing made total sense to me. In May, Eric Schmidt gave the commencement speech at the University of Arizona, and the moment the former Google CEO brought up AI, the graduates started booing him. He pushed through his lines anyway. At the University of Central Florida, a business executive told humanities graduates AI was "the next industrial revolution," and the crowd shouted her down. My favorite one was Glendale Community College in Arizona. They let software read out the graduates' names on stage. It mixed them up and skipped some completely, and when the college president admitted a new AI system was doing the reading, the whole room turned on her. (Can you blame them?) Pew surveyed 3,488 American adults in June, and the job numbers are where it really shows. 73% of adults under 30 believe AI will leave America with fewer jobs over the next 20 years. Two years ago, 61% said that. Only 5% of all adults expect AI to create more jobs. That's funny to me, because the economists keep landing somewhere else. The Economist estimated AI has added around a million American jobs while cutting roughly 200,000. Apollo's chief economist Torsten Slok has argued AI is adding jobs rather than destroying them. I'm living the economists' version. I built my agencies The Prohuman AI and Sentient Agency using AI, and we scaled because of it. Work that would've needed a much bigger team, we just did. So I get why a 22-year-old is scared. I just think they're scared of the wrong thing. A lot of the new jobs are real but they don't look like the old ones. Some are electricians wiring data centers. Some are people like me who figured out how to make these tools do actual work. None of them were handed to anyone. To be fair, this survey measures how people feel, not what happens to their paychecks. And they aren't even the most worried group. Adults 65 and older sit a little higher at 59%. The difference is the young were supposed to be the optimists, and they aren't anymore. What I'd tell every student I met is simple. Stop asking if AI will take your job and start learning what it can't do without you, because that's where the jobs in this era are going. Silicon Valley bet the kids would grow up loving AI. They grew up, and this spring they booed it at their own graduation.
