We were honoured to receive the Excellence in Social Development award at the 2026 AAMEG Awards, run in conjunction with the recent Africa Down Under Conference held in Perth. Celebrating the win, our General Manager of Sustainability, Mirey Lopez has had the opportunity to join the team onsite and present the award to participants and program leadership. The award celebrates a new trades training and qualifications program implemented at Sanbrado for the first time in 2025, with 105 employees having now completed their final assessment. The program enables employees to convert practical work experience into nationally recognised trade qualifications, while remaining in paid employment. This unique training and accreditation program was developed in partnership with the Burkina Faso Ministry of General Education, Vocational and Technical Training and a local training provider CFPEM (Centre de Formation Professionnelle Emploi Métier). $WAF’s training programs are a key component in developing the skills of our employees and helping to support succession and retention. More broadly, WAF promotes improved access to education from the early schooling years through to high school and adult education. We work with a number of training organisations and service providers in Burkina Faso to implement these programs. This has the dual benefit of supporting Burkinabè businesses, as well as using locally sourced solutions to ensure fit-for-purpose programs which will be sustainable in the long term. Our program aligns with the Ministry’s vision for improved skills and education for the youth of Burkina Faso, with the Ministry working to develop and improve the national education and qualifications system. This award recognises the outstanding efforts of our team to deliver measurable social benefits to local communities, while also celebrating the hard work and dedication of the program participants and partners.

Somisa and Toega recently hosted the 2026 Academic Excellence Day ceremony at the Zorgho Youth Centre in Ganzourgou Province. This event recognizes and rewards the efforts and achievements of outstanding students and teachers, along with acknowledging the collective contributions of educational institutions, local authorities and communities in supporting education across the region. More than 165 high achieving students and teachers were honoured at this year’s ceremony across several categories including; best pupil within the province, best pupil in the district, best pupil with a disability and best bilingual pupil. Prizes included new computers, e-tablets, bicycles, stationery and book supplies, along with bursaries to further support recipients with their studies. The exceptional work of teachers was equally celebrated, with numerous awards presented along with certificates of recognition in appreciation of their commitment and contribution to educating and supporting students. Beyond the awards themselves, the initiative seeks to encourage all students in their studies, to celebrate excellence and to affirm the essential role that teachers play in academic success. While recognizing high-achievers and top performing schools, this program also aims to promote equity, inclusion and perseverance amongst students. The event provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue and partnerships among teachers, parents, education authorities and corporate partners, with an investment of ~$65,000AUD to fund the prizes and ceremony, underscoring our continued commitment to placing education at the heart of our development programs. $WAF

TOEGA SA recently marked two major milestones in its Resettlement Action Plan at a formal ceremony in Kinkirgou, chaired by the High Commissioner of Ganzourgou Province. The event brought together administrative authorities, local communities, contractors and partners to celebrate the official handover of new homes to households affected by the Toega Gold Project and to acknowledge the laying of the foundation stone for the new Kinkirgou Primary School. Developed through close consultation with local stakeholders, the 30-hectare resettlement site will accommodate 58 households totalling 421 people. The layout of the site combined residential and commercial plots with shared community infrastructure including, access roads, a mosque, a cemetery, livestock care area and boreholes for potable water. Homes include both one- and two-bedroom houses each fitted with its own kitchen, shower and toilet facilities. Construction is now beginning on the Kinkirgou Primary School which will comprise of three classrooms, a canteen, toilets and a solar-powered borehole for safe potable water. Designed to service both resettled families and surrounding communities, the school reflects West African Resources continued commitment to expanding access to education, alongside high-quality housing. Together the resettlement infrastructure, school construction and associated support measures represent an investment of over $1.62million AUD. West African Resources commitment continues beyond construction, with ongoing support for livelihood restoration, community development and stakeholder engagement, work made possible by the strong collaboration between all parties involved.

SOMISA SA and TOEGA SA officially launched their Income-Generating Activities (IGA) programme delivering a broad package of support to communities affected by mining operations in the Sanbrado area. With wide participation across local traditional and administrative authorities, along with senior West African Resources staff, the ceremony was officially launched by the High Commissioner of the Ganzourgou Province. The Income Generating Activities program established at Toega is centred around: strengthening women’s income generating assets through livestock provision, enhancing youth employability through vocational skills training and supporting the organization and development of cooperatives. These initiatives are designed to be mutually reinforcing, combining productive capital, technical skills and collective organization to maximise long term socio-economic benefits. The Income Generating Activities program at Somisa builds on the success of the Livelihood Restoration Program and consists of 5 primary components: strengthening livestock capital through the provision of 2,520 sheep and goats to 605 beneficiaries, poultry support for 30 individuals, rice production support for 45 producers, along with the creation of a new two-hectare market garden equipped with a solar powered borehole and the construction of a modern bakery at Nedogo. These programs represent a combined total investment of ~$1.4mAUD and reflect West African Resources ongoing commitment to strengthening the local livelihoods, building technical capacity, supporting local entrepreneurship and aiding local families and communities in developing lasting sources of income.

As part of Kiaka’s Livelihood Restoration Program (LRP), now in its second year, Project-affected livestock farmers within the Boulgou and Zoundwéogo provinces were provided with high quality seed and livestock feed to support agricultural productivity through the winter season. Reaffirming our commitment to food security and the economic resilience of our local communities, 694 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) received 12 tonnes of WARI maize seeds. Known for their high yields, short growing cycle and 95% germination rate, these seeds provide an invaluable food source for livestock. Additionally, 40 tonnes of nutritionally rich, high quality cottonseed cake was distributed to support approximately 1,600 head of cattle across these households. Being a nutrient dense feed supplement, cottonseed cake is known to improve the general health of herds and boost yields of milk, providing a supplemental income to pastoralists along with boosting household nutrition. The 5-year Kiaka Livelihood Restoration Program (LRP) seeks through these actions to improve the agricultural productivity and strengthen the income-generating potential of Project-Affected Persons (PAPs). We are excited to continue our partnership with local communities and look forward to implementing the next phase of our livelihood restoration program.

SOMISA SA has doubled its annual university scholarship intake for 2026, expanding the program that has supported top-performing high school graduates from the communes of Boudry and Nédogo since 2022. The first cohort has now graduated, with one alumnus having since joined Sanbrado’s mining and geology team as a full-time employee. Each year, a selection committee comprising representatives from across Sanbrado and WAF’s General Manager of Sustainability identifies high-achieving graduates from local high schools. Recipients receive full university tuition, health insurance, and a computer to support three years of study in fields related to mining with current participants studying civil engineering, geology, and mining engineering. Upon graduation, students return to Sanbrado as interns, gaining hands-on experience at site. This scholarship program is one of a number of initiatives through which SOMISA SA and West African Resources support access to education within communities in which we operate, while also investing in the future of local youth by providing valuable hands-on industry experience. Kiaka will commence its scholarship program in 2026. $WAF

As part of Kiaka’s Livelihood restoration program (LRP), farming kits and training in the production of biopesticides and biofertilizers were provided to 350 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in the Guilawéogo, Gogo and Niaogho communes. Biopesticides and biofertilizers are agricultural products derived from or contain naturally occurring organisms and matter to enhance plant growth and soil health in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The team at ECHO (an agricultural development organization) led 3 days of training for 350 Project Affected Persons in skills and techniques to harness local plants and materials to enable the production of biofertilizers and biopesticides. These low-cost and practical techniques allow farmers to boost soil nutrition, control pests and plant diseases, and enrich agricultural production without the use of harsh and expensive chemical inputs. The adoption of these techniques aims to improve food security and provide greater autonomy for local small-scale producers, reducing their reliance on costly chemical inputs and increasing their resilience to climatic changes. Following the completion of the training, West African Resources $WAF provided participants with all necessary equipment to commence their own composting, biofertilizer, and biopesticide production. This initiative represents an investment of $83,000.00AUD to support our local communities. Now in its second year, we look forward to seeing the progress of participants and resuming training in 2027.
