Presidential Public Service Announcements Are Nothing New FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The attacks on President Donald J. Trump’s public service announcements are highly dishonest. The announcements are very clearly not campaign ads; President Trump is not on the ballot and there is no call to action. Instead, the announcements are a reminder for Americans to love their country and know why it’s worth defending at home, at the border, and abroad. That’s not partisanship that’s a government that still believes in the country it serves. Administrations of both parties have used public service announcements to explain policy and make the case for the nation’s direction: • The G.W. Bush Administration ran a national television campaign explaining the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act to seniors. It also bought Super Bowl airtime for anti-drug and anti-terrorism public service announcements. • The Obama Administration used national advertising to promote Obamacare subsidies and open enrollment, and a digital campaign to sell its Waters of the United States rule. • The Biden Administration poured hundreds of millions of dollars into “We Can Do This” television, digital, radio, and print spots to drive a nationwide public health message. • It’s not just modern Administrations. President Woodrow Wilson’s Committee on Public Information used posters, films, and speakers to rally the country. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Office of War Information produced films, radio, and posters to promote the war effort. When prior Administrations utilized the airwaves, it was called “public education.” When this Administration promotes pride in our country, many of those same voices call it “propaganda.” Patriotism isn’t partisan. Supplemental Pool Report #2: National Archives Presidents Trump and Xi and their wives entered the rotunda at 11:54 am. Print pooler could not see them enter the rotunda from the roped off press area. The group immediately walked over to the Declaration of Independence. The leaders and their wives were too far away to hear the discussion. About 3 minutes later they walked over to the US Constitution. President Trump pointed at it and asked an inaudible question. (It's very very echo-y in here.) His remarks were translated to Xi. The president then came over to press and said they were comparing China's documents to America's founding documents. "We're just comparing. Ours goes 250 years. Which is great, and we're proud of. Theirs goes 6,000 years. So there's a little difference between 6,000 and 250. But we're very proud of our 250." Asked what they accomplished in the meeting, he said: "We had a great meeting. We had a really great meeting. Great for the farmers. Great for everybody." Next up, was the Bill of Rights. President Trump made an aside to press that it was "great building." As they walked out, the president was asked if the spoke about Iran. President Trump said, "We did." Various clusters of protesters were spotted along the drive (the people themselves not visible from the motorcade because of the tarp, but their voices heard clearly as they waved large Chinese flags high in the air) Photographers in the motorcade spotted the two presidents and their wives going up the stairs of the Archives (pausing briefly to pose for a picture) Handing off to the supplemental pool. A pair of limos, parked alongside and in front of the Beast, had US and China’s flag on them. Couldn’t quite see them get in. In-town pool report #3a As mentioned, print pool was not permitted to go inside the Red Room spray, but our TV pool colleague who was in the room kindly shared his notes (big thanks to Josh Gross w/CBS News): The pool has been rushed to the motorcade for the Archives visit. We are idling on the driveway. Stills and a single pool video camera were permitted into the Red Room for the tea ceremony between the leaders and their spouses. No radio or print pooler was allowed in the group, despite requests to both the East and West Wings. Prior to entry, this limited pool held in the State Dining Room. Feet away in the Grand Foyer, a small chamber group played classical renditions of pop classics like "Fools Rush In" and "Something" on lead violin. The First Lady and Madame Peng shared a sofa underneath a Hudson River School painting, with Xi and Trump sitting in their own chairs. Tea and small plates of treats were on the coffee table between them. President Trump, leaning forward in this chair, opened by thanking the couple. We've had tremendous visit from two amazing people, he promised. We have made great strides. After translation, Xi answered in a quiet deep voice, thanking the president in his wife for the visit. The president and I are like two people chattering a ship on a great course, he claimed. This time we agreed to add new substance based on facts and fairness. Looking ahead, he continued, there are two more opportunities to meet at APEC in November and then later G20 in Florida. Trump got the last word. Great things are happening. I think are farmers are going to be really happy, he closed. The pool asked if Trump had asked the Chinese to stop sharing intel with Iran but the question is dropped out by the. So from this, one can see that the prospects for this relationship will get more brighter. Looking ahead to the remainder of this year, there will be two more opportunities for us to meet each other. Supplemental Pool #1: color from the National Archives Good morning. I will be your supplemental print pooler at the National Archives. The supplemental pool that has preset on a series of roped off platforms inside the rotunda of the National Archives. We are awaiting the two leaders and their wives. (They are currently at the White House.) The rotunda permanently houses the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. An additional display had been set up on a rectangular table in the middle of the room: a stone that a display card said came from the Great Wall of China and a letter from the Guangxu Emperor to Grover Cleveland acknowledging America's congratulations on the occasion of the Empress Dowager's 60^th birthday, according to a display card. The artifacts and the table were removed before the leaders arrived. It was not immediately clear why. Per the White House, the leaders will receive a tour of the National Archives from Bradford Wilson, the archivist of the United States. The Senate confirmed Wilson to the role in August. Across the street, there's another riser area, outside, for press capturing the arrival and departure of the leaders. That report will come from a different pooler. More to come. In-town Pool Report #2- Xi arrival President Xi’s car rolled up to the South portico at 10:46am. President Trump and the First Lady walked out seconds before to greet them. The two presidents and their first ladies posed for photo side by side. President Trump ignored a few shouted questions from the press about his discussions with President Xi and his ban of certain outlets earlier this week. He thanked the pool and went inside. The US and China’s flags flanked the South portico rooms and a short red carpet stretched into the diplomatic room.
