STANLEY DRUCKENMILLER: "I SHORTED $200 MILLION OF INTERNET STOCKS IN MARCH 1999. IN THREE WEEKS I COVERED THEM AT A $600 MILLION LOSS." "I was short 12 stocks. They all went bankrupt. Every one of them." He was right on every single pick. Still lost $600M. "If you're dead wrong on a long, you can lose 100%. If you're dead wrong on a short, you can lose 10 times your money." "Frankly, I'm not sure I've ever made money in shorts. I've never had a down year, but I'm not sure I've made money in shorts. I like it. It's fun. But you can get your head handed to you." "Don't try that at home."

Why I don’t short stocks. It’s not about being right. It’s about being right on timing, which is impossible to consistently get right. Get it wrong, you can go insolvent.

Not sure how he lost on a short if the companies he shorted went under. That's a dream scenario.

He’s exactly right. While shorting is intellectually satisfying, the math is against you badly. Your best shorts become a tiny % of your portfolio real fast. A badly timed short becomes a big % real fast. Very few live to tell about it.

He’s describing more than unlimited-loss math. He’s describing a trade structure with negative convexity, adverse carry, and brutal path dependency. In a short, being fundamentally right isn’t enough. You also have to be right on timing, positioning, liquidity, and the market’s willingness to care before the position size cares for you.

I'm with Stanley on this one bro, but it's all about risk management and sizing your bets right.

being early and being right are orthogonal, execution timing is the whole game

Being right on direction and wrong on timing is a specific kind of expensive, Druckenmiller covered too early on a momentum trade. The "you can lose 10x your money on a short" quote is the part most retail traders learn after the fact, not before.

this is why i only trade the long side on swing setups. asymmetry works in your favor on longs. on shorts the math is literally against you from day one
