Last month I requested federal relief for farmers in Okanogan County who faced significant damage to their apple, pear, cherry and stone fruit orchards due to severe spring frost.
I’m grateful to announce that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins granted that request and issued a Secretarial disaster designation. This enables farm operators in the affected area to apply for Farm Service Agency emergency loan assistance.
ALT Excerpt: Dear Governor Ferguson: Thank you for your letter of July 1, 2026, requesting a primary county disaster designation for Okanogan County in Washington due to damage and losses caused by frost and freeze events that occurred during the 2026 Crop Year. I am responding on behalf of the Department. The Department reviewed the loss assessment reports and determined that there were sufficient production losses to warrant a Secretarial natural disaster designation; therefore, I am designating Okanogan County as a primary natural disaster area, in two separate designations. In accordance with section 321(a) of the Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act, additional areas of your State are named as contiguous disaster counties. A Secretarial disaster designation makes farm operators in primary counties and those counties contiguous to such primary counties eligible to be considered for a Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loan assistance, provided eligibility requirements are met.

Although we have not detected any hornets since a live yellow-legged hornet was found on a ship in the Port of Vancouver earlier this spring, we still ask that everyone be on the lookout and report suspected sightings.
