Good Saturday morning. Did you know that white oak acorns are the “candy bar” of the oak world. Lower tannin levels make them far more palatable than red oak acorns. Wildlife managers and hunters treat a good white oak crop as a major event. More than 180 species of birds and mammals eat oak acorns; white oaks are the preferred brand. Black bears can eat tens of pounds a day in a mast year. Native peoples also processed them—soaking out remaining tannins, then grinding them into flour for bread, mush, or cakes.

Here is my go to Sunday meal prep for the week’s breakfasts when I’m out road running. 1.5 c dried pearl barley 1 qt-ish water 1/2 c peanut butter 1/3 c maple syrup 2 tbsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp sea salt Mix together in crockpot, cook until al dente. Cool and add desired dried fruits and nuts. I enjoy it with 3 hardboiled eggs and can work 5-6 hours solid before I’m even thinking about lunch.

Dropped some slab wood off to a new firewood customer who just landed a used wood stove from FB marketplace. Young guy, mid twenties, he and his wife both work full time and have two young children. He told me they put last year’s heating oil purchases on their credit cards and still haven’t paid that balance off yet. He called two weeks ago for another fill up and they quoted $5.90 a gallon - his exact words were “ well there goes Christmas”. I’m not dooming here, but more and more over the past 2-3 weeks I’m catching wind amongst my sphere that the squeeze is real and I’m not sure the real pain has even started.

This was a rewarding project to be involved with as a sawyer and it was slightly sexier than dunnage. Our 4/4 rough sawn eastern red cedar finished up nicely on two separate builds constructed by Mason Dixon Log and Beam.

An East Berlin tradition turns 50 this Saturday and I look forward to taking in the festivities. It takes effort and perseverance to carry traditions forward.
