Some things never change.....
Elon Musk's father sold a yacht that cost $400,000 for $105,000, and a farm worth $800,000 for $234,000. Not at full price, and not for himself. To fund his sons' first company in 1995. By his own count, about $32,000 of it reached them. Zip2 later sold to Compaq for $37 million, and Elon's share came to $22 million. The 2 and a half minute recording attached to this post is Errol Musk telling it himself. The interviewer opens with the figure from the reports, $28,000, and says Elon claims he never gave him anything. Watch 0:31, when he puts a price on the yacht and the farm. Then the arithmetic. He sold about $339,000 of assets. He says about $45,000 went out, and his sons got about $30,000 of it. At 1:10 he is asked about the $28,000. He says he does not know where that figure comes from, and by his reckoning it was more like $32,000. When he asked what arrived, he says, they were too busy to tell him. His other son, Kimbal, he says, told him the money paid for food and rent for six months, and without it they would not have lasted. At 2:24 he says what came back after the sale: $200,000. The reports say $28,000. He says $32,000. Neither number is the dispute. One side says it saved them, the other says nothing came. I think both can be true. Next to a $22 million stake, $32,000 is small, and to two brothers paying rent it was six months. You do not need a famous son for this. Any money you hand to family without paper becomes two stories within a few years, each told honestly. Did the yacht money build Zip2, or did Elon build it alone?

The rich are cutting back
Confirmed three more closures of Crumbl locations, which brings my count of shutdowns to at least 60 so far this year. One of those three is in Louisville, and comes along with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing, which gives us a partial picture of an operator's finances. The operators in this case walked away from a location that was opened in 2024 and had 2.5 years remaining on its lease. According to court documents, it has $352,780 in liabilities compared with just $10,000 in assets, all in the form of signs and cookie-making equipment. There's no other assets listed, including inventory, receivables, deposits, etc. The equipment is the collateral for a $269,109, secured loan with Republic Bank. So the collateral is worth just 3.7 cents for every $1 of secured debt. The operator also said that it lost $17,000 operating the business this year. And it owes $69,000 to the landlord for those 2.5 years remaining on the lease. At one point, this was one of the top 25% of Crumbl locations and the operators were telling @NRNonline that they wanted a third location. You can check out the original NRN article with the operators here: nrn.com/restaurant-franchisi… And here's our look at Crumbl: restaurantbusinessonline.com…
